Contact Dermatitis

How Chinese medicine differentiates contact dermatitis, the three patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs; identifying and avoiding the trigger remains the first step.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Widespread reaction, facial/genital swelling, or difficulty breathing needs urgent medical evaluation before assuming it is a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for contact dermatitis — 6 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
L.I.-11Clears Heat, cools Blood.
L.I.-4Expels exterior Wind, regulates Defensive Qi.
SP-6Tonifies Spleen, resolves Dampness.
SP-10Cools Blood, invigorates Blood.
ST-36Tonifies Qi and Blood, strengthens Spleen and Stomach.
ST-40Transforms Dampness and phlegm.
The Three Patterns

1. Damp-Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Bright red, swollen skin with weeping vesicles, intense burning and itching, rash appears quickly after contact, feeling of heaviness in body and head, dark, scanty urine.
Tongue: Red body with thick, yellow, greasy coating, may be swollen with teeth marks. Pulse: Soggy-rapid or slippery-rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat and drain Dampness.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's Damp-Heat in the Bladder slide on the Lower Burner organ-system level, the same logic used across several other skin conditions.

2. Blood Deficiency with External Wind

Clinical manifestations: Dry, flaky, or thickened skin, itching worsening at night, pale or sallow complexion, aversion to wind or drafts, dull, brittle nails and dry hair.
Tongue: Pale, thin body with thin white and slightly dry coating. Pulse: Thin and wiry, often floating superficially.
Treatment principle: Nourish Blood, moisten dryness, dispel Wind and stop itching.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. This site's Liver-Blood deficiency slide has no Wind component, so no pattern link is given here — the same well-established absence found for several other skin conditions.

3. Spleen Deficiency with Dampness

Clinical manifestations: Loose stools or diarrhea, abdominal bloating after eating, poor appetite and fatigue, heaviness of body and limbs, dull, lingering papules or eczema.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks, white greasy coating, moist surface. Pulse: Soggy and slow, possibly slippery.
Treatment principle: Strengthen Spleen Qi and drain internal Dampness.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. No deck on this site combines Spleen deficiency with Dampness in one slide, so no pattern link is given here.
