The Eight Extraordinary Vessels (EOV)

Qi Jing Ba Mai — the eight "curious" vessels that don't pair with an organ or run in the standard 12-channel sequence. Each is reached through its own Confluent (Master/Opening) point, always needled together with its paired vessel's Confluent point.

Ren Mai Du Mai Chong Mai Dai Mai Yang Qiao Mai Yin Qiao Mai Yang Wei Mai Yin Wei Mai

The four pairs: SP-4 + P-6 (Chong Mai / Yin Wei Mai) · G.B.-41 + T.B.-5 (Dai Mai / Yang Wei Mai) · BL-62 + S.I.-3 (Yang Qiao Mai / Du Mai) · KI-6 + LU-7 (Yin Qiao Mai / Ren Mai). Needle both points of a pair together when treating through that vessel.

Ren Mai Directing / Conception Vessel

Confluent point: LU-7 · Paired with: KI-6 (Yin Qiao Mai)

Pathway

Arises in the Lower Burner/Uterus, emerges at the perineum (Ren-1), ascends along the anterior midline through the abdomen and chest to the throat, around the mouth, ending below the eyes.

Function

The "Sea of Yin" — governs and connects all six Yin channels; regulates menstruation, pregnancy and the Uterus; nourishes Yin, Blood and Essence in the Lower Burner.

Key Points & Indications

Owns its own 24 points (Ren-1 to Ren-24), including Ren-4, Ren-6, Ren-12 and Ren-17 already covered in the point decks. Used for menstrual and reproductive disorders, infertility, hernia, and abdominal masses.

Du Mai Governing Vessel

Confluent point: S.I.-3 · Paired with: BL-62 (Yang Qiao Mai)

Pathway

Arises in the Lower Burner near the Kidneys, emerges at the perineum, ascends along the posterior midline through the spine, over the crown of the head, down the forehead to the philtrum.

Function

The "Sea of Yang" — governs and connects all six Yang channels; governs the Brain and spine; reflects overall constitutional Yang strength.

Key Points & Indications

Owns its own 28 points (Du-1 to Du-28), including Du-4, Du-14 and Du-20 already covered in the point decks. Used for spinal and back problems, mental-emotional/Shen disturbance, stiffness, and febrile disease.

Chong Mai Penetrating Vessel

Confluent point: SP-4 · Paired with: P-6 (Yin Wei Mai)

Pathway

Arises in the Lower Burner/Uterus, emerges at ST-30, runs alongside the Kidney channel up the abdomen and chest, dispersing there; a lower branch runs down the leg to the foot.

Function

The "Sea of Blood" — closely tied to menstruation and reproduction; regulates the Qi and Blood of all twelve channels; the vessel most implicated in rebellious (ascending) Qi.

Key Points & Indications

Shares points with the Kidney channel (KI-11 to KI-21) and ST-30. Used for menstrual irregularities, infertility, Qi counterflow (belching, vomiting, hiccup), and abdominal masses.

Dai Mai Girdle / Belt Vessel

Confluent point: G.B.-41 · Paired with: T.B.-5 (Yang Wei Mai)

Pathway

The only vessel running horizontally — encircles the waist like a belt, arising near LIV-13/G.B.-26, binding together all the longitudinal channels that pass through the trunk.

Function

Binds and restrains all the vertically-running channels; controls vaginal/leukorrheal discharge; governs strength and coordination of the legs.

Key Points & Indications

Its own points G.B.-26 (Daimai), G.B.-27 and G.B.-28. Used for vaginal discharge, weakness or heaviness of the legs, hernia, uterine prolapse, and flank/lateral abdominal distension.

Yang Qiao Mai Yang Heel Vessel

Confluent point: BL-62 · Paired with: S.I.-3 (Du Mai)

Pathway

Arises at the heel near BL-62, ascends the lateral leg, trunk, shoulder and neck to the face, meeting near G.B.-20/BL-1.

Function

Governs movement on the lateral (Yang) aspect of the legs; controls opening of the eyes and wakefulness — Yang predominance keeps the eyes open.

Key Points & Indications

Passes through BL-59, G.B.-29, S.I.-10, L.I.-15, G.B.-20 and BL-1. Used for insomnia (Yang Excess keeping the eyes open), epilepsy of Yang type, lateral leg Bi syndrome, and red, painful eyes.

Yin Qiao Mai Yin Heel Vessel

Confluent point: KI-6 · Paired with: LU-7 (Ren Mai)

Pathway

Arises at the heel near KI-6, ascends the medial leg, trunk and chest to the throat and the medial canthus of the eye, meeting BL-1.

Function

Governs movement on the medial (Yin) aspect of the legs; controls closing of the eyes and sleep — Yin predominance closes the eyes.

Key Points & Indications

Passes through KI-8 and the medial ankle/leg before reaching BL-1. Used for excessive sleepiness (Yin Excess), epilepsy of Yin type, medial leg Bi syndrome, and throat obstruction.

Yang Wei Mai Yang Linking Vessel

Confluent point: T.B.-5 · Paired with: G.B.-41 (Dai Mai)

Pathway

Arises at BL-63, ascends the lateral leg and side of the body to the shoulder and neck, connecting with G.B.-20, Du-15 and Du-16.

Function

Links and connects all six Yang channels; governs the body's Exterior — the vessel most associated with alternating chills and fever.

Key Points & Indications

Passes through G.B.-35, T.B.-13, G.B.-21, G.B.-20, Du-15 and Du-16. Used for alternating chills and fever, Exterior conditions, lateral headache, and neck/shoulder stiffness.

Yin Wei Mai Yin Linking Vessel

Confluent point: P-6 · Paired with: SP-4 (Chong Mai)

Pathway

Arises at KI-9, ascends the medial leg, abdomen and chest to the throat, connecting with Ren-22 and Ren-23.

Function

Links and connects all six Yin channels; governs the body's Interior — the vessel most associated with chest and Heart pain.

Key Points & Indications

Passes through SP-13, SP-15, SP-16, LIV-14, Ren-22 and Ren-23. Used for chest and Heart pain, epigastric pain, emotional disorders, and throat/oesophageal obstruction.
