Skin Abscess

How Chinese medicine differentiates a skin abscess, the three patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs; a mature abscess usually needs incision and drainage as standard care alongside any acupuncture support.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. A large, deep, rapidly enlarging abscess, or one with fever, needs urgent medical evaluation — drainage is often required and acupuncture is not a substitute for it.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for a skin abscess — 8 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
L.I.-4Clears heat and moves Qi/Blood.
L.I.-11Clears heat and resolves dampness.
DU-14Clears Heat, releases the Exterior and expels exterior Wind.
SP-10Sea of Blood point, cools Blood and invigorates Blood.
BL-17Master point for blood disorders, dispels stasis.
SP-9Drains dampness and regulates the Spleen.
SP-6Tonifies the Spleen and resolves dampness.
ST-36Tonifies Spleen and Stomach, transforms dampness.
The Three Patterns

1. Toxic-Heat Stagnation

Clinical manifestations: Bright red, hot, and throbbing abscess; rapid swelling with pus formation; high fever and intense heat sensation; intense thirst for cold beverages; dark, scanty urine or constipation; thick yellow pus.
Tongue: Deep red body with prickly papillae and thick, dry yellow coating. Pulse: Rapid, forceful, often overflowing.
Treatment principle: Clear heat and resolve toxicity, disperse swelling, invigorate blood.
Note: no moxa. No standalone Toxic-Heat slide exists on this site, so no pattern link is given here.

2. Blood Stagnation with Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Hard, dark-purple lump that is slow to form pus; fixed stabbing pain at the abscess site, worse at night and with pressure; dark purplish skin around the abscess; irritability and restlessness.
Tongue: Reddish-purple body with stasis spots, distended sublingual veins, thin dry yellow coating. Pulse: Choppy and rapid, often wiry.
Treatment principle: Invigorate blood and dispel stasis, move Qi and alleviate pain.
Note: no moxa. Matches Liver-Blood stasis — dark purplish discoloration and a stasis-spot tongue are the same core markers named there, with Heat added on top.

3. Damp-Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Boggy, swollen abscess that may ooze clear or yellow fluid; heaviness in body and head, as if wrapped in cloth; sticky or greasy sensation in mouth, poor appetite; loose, sticky stools feeling incomplete; abscess tends to appear on lower body or in skin folds.
Tongue: Red body with yellow, greasy coating, difficult to scrape off. Pulse: Slippery-rapid or soggy-rapid.
Treatment principle: Drain excess fire from the Liver and Gallbladder, clear Damp-Heat from the lower burner.
Note: no moxa. Matched to Damp-Heat in the Bladder on the Lower Burner organ-system level — the source's own "tends to appear on lower body" note supports this, same logic already used for Athlete's Foot and Fungal Skin Infection.
