Adrenal Insufficiency

How Chinese medicine differentiates adrenal insufficiency, the four patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs, and only as supportive care alongside endocrinology management.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Adrenal insufficiency needs ongoing endocrinology management, including steroid replacement where prescribed — acupuncture here is supportive care, not a substitute for that management. Severe weakness, vomiting, or fainting can signal an adrenal crisis and needs emergency care immediately.

3. Kidney and Spleen Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Early-morning diarrhea; chronic loose stools with undigested food; poor appetite and abdominal bloating; a cold pain in the abdomen; cold hands and feet below the knees; a sore, cold lower back.
Tongue: Pale, swollen, puffy with teeth marks, white slippery coating. Pulse: Deep, weak, slow; both rear positions feeble, right middle position weak.
Treatment principle: Warm Yang and disperse Cold, tonify Qi and strengthen the Spleen.
Note: moxa applicable. Direct match with Kidney- and Spleen-Yang deficiency.

4. Lesser Yin Cold Transformation

Clinical manifestations: Constant drowsiness with a desire to sleep; ice-cold hands and feet; diarrhea with undigested food; severe chills with curling up in bed; profound internal coldness.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tender with tooth marks, white slippery coating, excessively moist. Pulse: Fine, faint, deep, slow.
Treatment principle: Rescue devastated Yang from collapse, warm the interior and expel Cold.
Note: this presentation (profound cold collapse) needs urgent medical evaluation for possible adrenal crisis before any acupuncture — moxa applicable once medically stable. No deck on this site has this specific Shang Han Lun-framed Yang-collapse category, so no pattern link is given here.
