Anus Prolapse

How Chinese medicine differentiates rectal prolapse into the two patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's own Hemorrhoids page. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Prolapsed tissue that will not reduce, or that shows signs of strangulation (severe pain, dusky color), needs urgent medical evaluation regardless of pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for rectal prolapse — 7 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
DU-20Raises Yang. Benefits the Brain and the sense organs.
ST-36Benefits Stomach and Spleen. Tonifies Qi and Blood.
REN-6Tonifies Qi and Yang. Raises sinking Qi.
ST-25Regulates the Intestines. Resolves Dampness. Clears Heat in the Stomach and Intestines.
ST-37Regulates the Stomach and Intestines and resolves retention of Food. Eliminates Damp-Heat.
BL-57Relaxes the sinews and removes obstructions from the channel. Treats haemorrhoids.
SP-9Regulates the Spleen. Resolves Dampness. Opens the Water passages.
The Two Patterns

1. Spleen Qi Sinking View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Bearing-down or dragging sensation in the rectum, prolapse triggered by defecation, coughing, or prolonged standing, chronic fatigue and physical exhaustion, poor appetite and loose stools, dizziness or lightheadedness.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, and tender with teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Weak and forceless at the right middle position, may feel deep.
Treatment principle: Tonify Spleen-Qi and raise sunken Qi to restore the body's upward lifting mechanism.
Note: moxa strongly indicated throughout, especially DU-20. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Spleen-Qi-sinking slide.

2. Damp-Heat in the Large Intestine View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Burning sensation at the anus, mucus or blood in stool, urgent straining with incomplete evacuation, foul-smelling yellow-brown stools, feeling of body heat or thirst.
Tongue: Red body with a thick yellow greasy coating, thickest at the center and root. Pulse: Slippery and rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Damp-Heat from the Large Intestine, reduce downward pressure, and lift prolapsed tissue.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Damp-Heat-in-the-Large-Intestine slide.
