Chilblains

How Chinese medicine differentiates chilblains, the four patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Ulcerated, pus-filled, or spreading lesions need medical evaluation before acupuncture is considered.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for chilblains — 8 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Four Patterns

1. Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fixed, stabbing pain in the affected area; purple or dusky skin patches with swelling; coldness and numbness in the extremities, with lesions that don't ulcerate or produce pus.
Tongue: Pale or dusky purple body, possible stasis spots, thin white coat. Pulse: Deep, thin, choppy or wiry.
Treatment principle: Warm the channels, disperse Cold, and activate Blood to address Cold-induced stasis.
Note: moxa applicable on the Warm points. Matches Liver-Blood stasis — purple/dusky skin and dark discoloration are the same markers named there.

2. Qi Deficiency Causing Blood Stagnation

Clinical manifestations: An aching, cold pain in the lesions; purple or dusky red lesions that heal slowly; cold and numb fingers or toes; marked fatigue and weakness; shortness of breath with mild activity.
Tongue: Pale-dark or pale-purple body with possible purple spots, teeth marks, thin white coat. Pulse: Deep, fine or weak, choppy.
Treatment principle: Boost Qi circulation, invigorate Blood, and warm the channels for chronic healing.

Invigorate Blood
Note: moxa applicable on the Tonify-Qi points. No deck on this site combines Qi deficiency with Blood stagnation into one slide, so no pattern link is given here.

3. Yang Deficiency with Cold-Damp

Clinical manifestations: Icy cold hands and feet that are hard to warm; a deep, heavy aching in the bones and joints; a low back that feels cold and sore; a pale, puffy face; mental fog or confusion in severe cases.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks, white greasy moist coating. Pulse: Deep, slow, fine or soft.
Treatment principle: Restore devastated Yang and rescue the body from collapse by warming the interior and dispelling deep Cold.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. No deck on this site has a combined Yang-deficiency-with-Cold-Damp category, so no pattern link is given here.

4. Blood Stagnation with Heat

Clinical manifestations: A red, hot, swollen lesion that may ulcerate and discharge pus; throbbing or stabbing pain; fever, thirst, and irritability, with signs of infection.
Tongue: Reddish-purple body with dark stasis spots, distended veins under the tongue, thin dry yellow coat. Pulse: Choppy and rapid, often wiry.
Treatment principle: Clear intense toxic Heat from the Blood vessels, restore circulation, and resolve inflammatory stasis.
Note: no moxa. No deck on this site has a Blood-stasis-with-Heat category, so no pattern link is given here.
