Chronic Venous Insufficiency

How Chinese medicine differentiates chronic venous insufficiency — distinct from Varicose Veins, Edema and Lymphedema already covered — the four patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs, used as supportive care alongside compression and standard vascular management.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Sudden leg swelling, redness, warmth, or a skin ulcer that will not heal needs medical evaluation (a blood clot or infection must be ruled out) before assuming a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for chronic venous insufficiency — 7 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
ST-36Tonifies Qi and Blood. Tonifies the Stomach and Spleen.
SP-10Cools the Blood. Invigorates Blood and removes stagnation.
SP-6Tonifies the Spleen and Stomach. Resolves Dampness and benefits urination.
SP-9Regulates the Spleen. Resolves Dampness.
ST-40Resolves Dampness and Phlegm.
LR-3Moves Liver-Qi to unblock stagnation and relieve pain.
BL-17Influential point of Blood, treats all Blood disorders and stasis.
The Four Patterns

1. Qi Deficiency Causing Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Leg heaviness and fatigue worsening with standing, fixed aching pain in the legs, pale or dusky complexion, visible varicose veins with dark discoloration, shortness of breath on exertion, numbness or tingling in the feet.
Tongue: Pale body with a dark or purplish tinge, possible stasis spots, teeth marks, distended veins underneath, thin white coat. Pulse: Deep, fine/weak, choppy.
Treatment principle: Tonify Qi, invigorate Blood and dispel stasis, unblock the channels.
Note: moxa applicable on ST-36. Linked to this site's Liver-Blood-stasis slide via the well-established stasis-spot-tongue marker, with the root Qi-deficiency component flagged as an extension beyond the deck's own excess-pattern framing.

2. Phlegm-Fluids in the Limbs

Clinical manifestations: Heavy aching pain in the legs, swelling or puffiness of the lower limbs, sensation of heaviness in the whole body, chills and aversion to cold, sticky or greasy sensation in the mouth.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks, white slippery coating, excessively moist. Pulse: Floating and tight, wiry.
Treatment principle: Warm and transform Phlegm-fluids, resolve Dampness.
Note: moxa applicable given the Cold/chills. This site has no organ-nonspecific Phlegm-Fluids-in-the-limbs slide, a gap confirmed absent many times over — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

3. Spleen Deficiency With Dampness

Clinical manifestations: Heavy, swollen legs worsening with standing, abdominal bloating worse after eating, loose or unformed stools, poor appetite and fatigue, sticky or greasy sensation in the mouth, pale or dusky complexion.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks, white greasy coating, moist surface. Pulse: Soggy and slow, possibly slippery.
Treatment principle: Tonify Qi, strengthen the Spleen, drain Dampness.
Note: moxa applicable on ST-36. This site has no combined Spleen-deficiency-with-Dampness slide, a gap confirmed absent many times over (most recently for Lipoma, this same batch) — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

4. Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fixed, stabbing pain in the legs, pain worsening at night, dark purplish skin discoloration, visible varicose veins, pain worsening with pressure, hard palpable nodules along veins.
Tongue: Purple body with stasis spots and dark, distended sublingual veins. Pulse: Choppy or wiry.
Treatment principle: Invigorate Blood and dispel stasis, move Qi and alleviate pain.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Liver-Blood-stasis slide via the well-established stasis-spot-tongue marker — this pattern's own presentation is more excess-dominant than Pattern 1's, staying within the established two-links-per-page cap to this slide.
