Corns

How Chinese medicine differentiates corns, the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs; proper footwear and mechanical offloading remain part of standard care.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. A corn that is unusually painful, ulcerated, or occurring in someone with diabetes or poor circulation needs medical evaluation before home or acupuncture-only care.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for corns — 9 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
LR-3Subdues Liver Yang, main point to smooth Liver Qi.
SP-10Cools the blood, invigorates blood and removes stagnation.
L.I.-4Moves Qi powerfully and relieves pain.
SP-6Tonifies Spleen and Stomach, resolves dampness.
SP-9Regulates Spleen, resolves dampness.
L.I.-11Clears heat, cools the blood.
ST-36Tonifies Qi and blood, tonifies Stomach and Spleen.
ST-40Resolves dampness and phlegm.
BL-20Tonifies Spleen Qi and Yang, resolves dampness.
LR-14Invigorates Liver Qi, directly unbinds stagnation.
The Five Patterns

1. Qi and Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fixed, stabbing pain in the corn; hard corn with dark or purplish hue; pain worsens with direct pressure.
Tongue: Purple or dark body with stasis spots and distended sublingual veins. Pulse: Wiry and choppy.
Treatment principle: Invigorate Blood and dispel stasis, move Qi and alleviate pain.
Note: no moxa. Direct match — dark/purplish discoloration and a stasis-spot tongue are the same core markers named on this site's Liver-Blood stasis slide.

2. Damp-Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Redness and swelling around the corn; burning pain; sticky or moist sensation at site; feeling of heaviness in body; sticky taste in mouth.
Tongue: Red body with yellow, greasy coating. Pulse: Slippery and rapid.
Treatment principle: Drain fire, resolve toxicity, clear heat.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's Damp-Heat in the Bladder slide on the Lower Burner organ-system level — corns form on weight-bearing skin of the feet, the same logic already used for Athlete's Foot.

3. Spleen Deficiency with Dampness

Clinical manifestations: Soft, pale corns that may feel moist; feet sweat easily and feel damp; fatigue and heavy limbs; poor appetite with bloating after eating; loose or unformed stools.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks, white greasy coating, moist surface. Pulse: Soggy and slow, or slippery.
Treatment principle: Tonify Qi, strengthen the Spleen, drain Dampness.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. No deck on this site combines Spleen deficiency with Dampness in one slide, so no pattern link is given here.

4. Damp-Phlegm

Clinical manifestations: Large, hard corn with sticky or waxy feel; heaviness in body and limbs; chest or epigastric fullness and bloating; fatigue, drowsiness, and brain fog.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with scalloped edges and thick, white, greasy coating that looks oily. Pulse: Slippery, like beads rolling in oil.
Treatment principle: Dry Dampness and transform Phlegm, regulate Qi and harmonize the Middle Burner.
Note: no moxa except on tonifying points. No deck on this site has a generic Damp-Phlegm slide outside the Lungs, so no pattern link is given here.

5. Liver Qi Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Irritability or short temper; frequent sighing; rib-side distension or discomfort; corn pain worsens with emotional stress.
Tongue: Normal or slightly dark body, red or slightly purple sides, thin white coat. Pulse: Wiry, taut like a guitar string.
Treatment principle: Course the Liver and resolve constraint, move Qi and alleviate pain.
Note: no moxa. Direct match on the core distension/irritability/sighing picture.
