Frontal Headaches

How Chinese medicine differentiates frontal (forehead) headaches into the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's Headache, Vertex Headache and Occipital Headache pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. A sudden severe headache, headache with fever and stiff neck, or a new headache with vision change needs urgent medical assessment.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for frontal headaches — 3 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
L.I.-4Expels exterior Wind and releases the Exterior. Promotes the diffusing of Lung-Qi, regulates the Defensive Qi and sweating. Stops pain.
G.B.-20Expels exterior Wind. Extinguishes interior Wind. Subdues Liver-Yang.
ST-44Clears Heat. Regulates the Intestines and resolves Damp-Heat. Calms the Mind.
