Fungal Infection

How Chinese medicine differentiates a fungal skin infection into the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's own Athlete's Foot page. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Widespread infection, high fever, or pus-filled blisters needs prompt medical evaluation before assuming a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for a fungal skin infection — 11 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
SP-9Regulates the Spleen. Resolves Dampness. Opens the Water passages.
SP-6Strengthens the Spleen. Nourishes Blood and Yin.

The Six Patterns

1. Damp-Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Skin oozes clear or yellow fluid, macerated soggy-looking skin in moist body folds, yellowish crusting or sticky scales, body feels heavy with a head sensation of wrapping, poor appetite with nausea or sticky taste.
Tongue: Red body with a thick, yellow, greasy coating that is difficult to scrape off. Pulse: Soggy and rapid, or slippery and rapid when Heat predominates.
Treatment principle: Drain Damp-Heat from Liver and Gallbladder, clear Heat and dry Dampness from the Lower Burner.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's own Damp-Heat-invading-the-Spleen slide, the safer general match given this presentation is not confined to the genitals (unlike this site's genital-specific Liver Damp-Heat slide).

2. Heat in the Blood

Clinical manifestations: Bright red, well-defined patches appearing quickly, intense itching with burning sensation, internal Heat worse at night, thirst desiring cold drinks, restlessness and irritability, possible bleeding tendency.
Tongue: Deep red body, possibly with red spots or prickles, thin yellow dry coating. Pulse: Rapid and often wiry or slippery.
Treatment principle: Cool the Nutritive level, resolve Heat toxins, vent pathogenic Heat outward.
Note: no moxa. This site has no standalone Heat-in-the-Blood slide on any deck, a gap confirmed absent many times over this session — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

3. Blood Deficiency With External Wind View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dry, rough, scaly skin patches, itching worsens at night or when tired, pale complexion and lips, sensitivity to wind or drafts, dizziness or light-headedness, brittle nails and dry hair.
Tongue: Pale thin body with thin white and slightly dry coating. Pulse: Fine, often wiry at the left middle position and floating at the right front position.
Treatment principle: Nourish Blood and moisten Dryness, dispel Wind and stop itching, tonify Qi and consolidate the Exterior.
Note: moxa applicable on ST-36. Linked to this site's own Liver-Blood-deficiency slide, the closest match, with the external-Wind-invasion component flagged as a gap that slide alone does not cover.

4. Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dark purplish, thickened skin plaques, lesions feel hard or leathery, fixed location, itching worsens at night, dark purplish lips or nail beds, dark circles under the eyes.
Tongue: Purple or dusky body with possible stasis spots, distended dark sublingual veins, thin white coat. Pulse: Choppy, rough and uneven like a knife scraping bamboo.
Treatment principle: Invigorate Blood and dispel stasis, move Qi and alleviate pain, open the chest and disperse stagnation.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Liver-Blood-stasis slide via the established discoloration-marker rule.

5. Spleen Deficiency With Dampness

Clinical manifestations: Recurrent fungal infections in moist skin folds, loose unformed stools, abdominal bloating worse after eating, heaviness in the body and limbs, poor appetite, sticky or greasy sensation in the mouth.
Tongue: Pale and swollen with teeth marks, white greasy coating, moist surface. Pulse: Soggy and slow, soft and lacking force.
Treatment principle: Tonify Qi, strengthen the Spleen, drain Dampness, correcting the internal Dampness that makes skin prone to fungal overgrowth.
Note: moxa applicable on ST-36/BL-20. This site has no combined Spleen-deficiency-with-Dampness slide, a gap confirmed absent many times over this session — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

6. Toxic-Heat

Clinical manifestations: Widespread redness and burning pain, pus-filled blisters or pustules, high fever, intense thirst desiring cold drinks, restlessness and irritability.
Tongue: Red body with prickly thorns, dry yellow coating. Pulse: Rapid, forceful, often full or slippery.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat and resolve toxicity, cool the Blood, disperse swelling and dissipate nodules.
Note: no moxa; high fever with pus-filled blisters needs prompt medical evaluation regardless. This site has no standalone Toxic-Heat slide on any deck — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.
