Skin Rashes

How Chinese medicine differentiates general skin rashes — broader than Eczema, Contact Dermatitis and Urticaria already covered — the seven patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. A rash with fever, spreading rapidly, blistering, or affecting the mouth/eyes needs prompt medical evaluation before assuming a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for skin rashes — 9 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
L.I.-11Clears Heat and cools Blood. Removes obstructions and Heat from the channel.
SP-10Cools Blood. Invigorates Blood and eliminates stasis.
ST-36Benefits Stomach and Spleen. Tonifies Qi and Blood.
DU-14Clears Heat. Releases the Exterior and expels exterior Wind.
L.I.-4Expels exterior Wind and releases the Exterior.
G.B.-20Expels exterior Wind. Extinguishes interior Wind. Clears Heat.
SP-6Strengthens the Spleen. Nourishes Blood and Yin.
SP-9Regulates the Spleen. Resolves Dampness.
KI-3Tonifies the Kidneys (both Yin and Yang). Benefits Essence.
The Seven Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Damp-Heat

Clinical manifestations: Oozing, weeping lesions, intense itching worsened by warmth/humidity, heaviness, poor appetite, loose sticky stools.
Tongue: Red body with yellow greasy coating. Pulse: Slippery and rapid.
Treatment principle: Drain excess Fire from Liver/Gallbladder, clear Damp-Heat from the Lower Burner.
Note: moxa applicable on ST-36 only. This pattern's own point set and symptom list (no bitter taste, no rib pain, no urinary symptoms) don't cleanly match any of this site's organ-specific Damp-Heat slides despite the source's own treatment-principle text mentioning Liver/Gallbladder — so no pattern link is given here rather than forcing a mismatched fit; points still link fine individually.

2. Heat in the Blood

Clinical manifestations: Bright red, hot rash, sudden appearance, intense thirst, restlessness, bleeding tendency.
Tongue: Red body with red spots/prickles, thin yellow dry coating. Pulse: Rapid, wiry, forceful.
Treatment principle: Cool the Blood, reduce Heat agitating circulation.
Note: no moxa. This site has no standalone Heat-in-the-Blood slide (confirmed absent early in this project), so no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

3. Wind-Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Intense, hot, moving itching, red bumps or hives on the face/upper body, sudden onset after allergens or cold exposure, warm/burning skin.
Tongue: Red tip/edges with thin yellow-white coating. Pulse: Floating and rapid.
Treatment principle: Dispel Wind, clear Heat, drain Dampness.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's own Invasion-of-Lungs-by-Wind-Heat slide on the exterior-invasion level.

4. Blood Deficiency With External Wind

Clinical manifestations: Dry, flaky, rough, cracked skin, itching shifts location, worse at night, pale complexion, aversion to wind/drafts.
Tongue: Pale, thin body with thin white slightly-dry coat. Pulse: Fine, wiry on the left middle, floating on the right front.
Treatment principle: Nourish Blood and moisten dryness, dispel Wind, stop itching.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. This dermatological Blood-deficiency-generating-Wind pattern is confirmed absent as its own slide on this site, distinct from the organ-level Liver-Blood-deficiency slide — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

5. Spleen Deficiency With Dampness

Clinical manifestations: Dull-red or brownish rash, oozing lesions, worse after eating/fatigue, bloating, loose stools, poor appetite.
Tongue: Pale, swollen with teeth marks, white greasy coating. Pulse: Soggy and slowed.
Treatment principle: Tonify Spleen-Qi, strengthen digestive transformation, drain Dampness.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. No Cold marker in this pattern's own presentation, so it is not forced onto the Cold-Dampness-invading-the-Spleen slide, consistent with the established precedent. No pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

6. Yin and Blood Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Extremely dry, rough, cracked skin, night itching, pale complexion, dry mouth/throat, night sweats, warmth in the palms/soles/chest.
Tongue: Pale to pale-red, thin, dry with cracks, scanty peeled coating. Pulse: Fine and rapid.
Treatment principle: Nourish Liver/Kidney Yin, enrich Blood, moisten dryness.
Note: moxa applicable, light technique given the Yin component. This site's decks have no combined Yin-and-Blood-deficiency slide (confirmed absent again, after Chronic Dysentery), so no pattern link is given — points still link fine individually.

7. Toxic-Heat

Clinical manifestations: High fever, red swollen painful lesions with pus, intense thirst, sore throat, mouth ulcers, dark scanty urine, constipation.
Tongue: Red with prickly papillae, dry yellow coating. Pulse: Rapid and forceful, often full/overflowing.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat and resolve toxicity, cool the Blood, reduce inflammatory swelling.
Note: no moxa, medical urgency. The by-now very well-established standalone-Toxic-Heat absence, confirmed again here — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.
