Head Fog

How Chinese medicine differentiates head fog (brain fog) into the four patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's own Poor Memory and Poor Concentration pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Sudden or severe mental fogginess, especially with other new symptoms, needs medical evaluation before assuming a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for head fog — 10 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Four Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Spleen Deficiency With Dampness

Clinical manifestations: Head feels heavy and muzzy, as if wrapped in cloth, mental cloudiness and drowsiness after meals, abdominal bloating and loose stools, poor appetite and feeling full quickly, heaviness in the limbs, sticky or greasy sensation in the mouth.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks, white greasy coating, moist surface. Pulse: Soggy and slowed-down, or slippery.
Treatment principle: Tonifies Qi, strengthens the Spleen, drains Dampness, restoring digestive function to generate clear thinking energy.
Note: moxa applicable on ST-36. This site has no combined Spleen-deficiency-with-Dampness slide, a gap confirmed absent many times over this session — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

2. Damp-Phlegm

Clinical manifestations: Head feels heavy or wrapped, chest and upper abdominal stuffiness, nausea or vomiting, copious white phlegm, drowsiness and mental fogginess, sluggish thinking.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with scalloped teeth marks and thick, white, greasy coating appearing oily and wet. Pulse: Slippery, rolling like beads, may feel soggy in the right Guan position.
Treatment principle: Transforms Wind-Phlegm and stops spasms, strengthens the Spleen and resolves Dampness, calms the Liver and stops dizziness.
Note: no moxa. This site has no plain body-wide Damp-Phlegm slide on any deck, a gap confirmed absent many times over this session — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

3. Qi and Blood Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Mental cloudiness worsens when tired, pale complexion and lips, fatigue and weakness, dizziness or lightheadedness, poor appetite, forgetfulness and poor concentration, floaty foggy sensation.
Tongue: Pale body, may be thin or have teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and weak.
Treatment principle: Tonifies Qi, nourishes Blood, strengthens the Spleen, to adequately nourish the brain.
Note: moxa applicable on ST-36. This site has no combined Qi-and-Blood-deficiency slide, a gap confirmed absent many times over this session — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

4. Heart and Spleen Qi and Blood Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Palpitations or fluttering chest, insomnia with excessive dreaming, poor appetite and bloating after meals, pale lips and nails, forgetfulness and poor concentration, shortness of breath on mild exertion.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, teeth-marked body with thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and weak, left Cun (Heart) position feels empty, right Guan (Spleen) position is soft.
Treatment principle: Tonifies Qi, nourishes Blood, strengthens the Spleen while anchoring the spirit through Heart-Spleen integration.
Note: moxa applicable on ST-36/BL-20. Linked to this site's own Spleen-and-Heart-Blood-deficiency slide, the closest match, with the source's mixed Qi-and-Blood framing flagged against that slide's pure-Blood framing.
