High Fever

How Chinese medicine differentiates high fever — distinct from Common Cold already covered — the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. A high fever, especially with stiff neck, confusion, difficulty breathing, a rash, or in an infant, needs prompt medical evaluation before assuming a simple pattern — acupuncture supports recovery, it does not replace emergency care.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for high fever — 9 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
DU-14Clears Heat. Releases the Exterior and expels exterior Wind.
L.I.-11Clears Heat and cools Blood.
ST-44Clears Heat. Regulates the Intestines and resolves Damp-Heat.
L.I.-4Expels exterior Wind and releases the Exterior.
T.B.-5Expels Wind-Heat. Clears Heat in the head.
P-3Clears Heat and cools Blood. Extinguishes interior Wind. Invigorates Blood and eliminates stasis.
BL-40Clears Heat and cools Blood. Clears Summer-Heat.
ST-40Resolves Phlegm and Dampness.
LU-7Releases the Exterior and expels exterior Wind.
The Six Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Qi-Level Heat

Clinical manifestations: High fever without chills, intense thirst for cold drinks, profuse sweating, irritability and restlessness, flushed face.
Tongue: Red body with yellow, dry coating. Pulse: Overflowing and rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Qi-level Heat, drain Fire, and regenerate fluids.
Note: no moxa. This is a Four-Levels (Wei-Qi-Ying-Xue) Warm-Disease framework concept rather than a Zang-Fu pattern, so it is structurally absent from every organ deck on this site — the same class of gap already found for the Six-Stages/Shao-Yang concept. No pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

2. Exterior-Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fever predominates over chills, sore/swollen throat, mild sweating, thirst, headache and body aches, thick yellow nasal discharge cough.
Tongue: Normal or slightly red tip/sides, thin white/faintly yellow coating. Pulse: Floating and rapid.
Treatment principle: Release the Exterior and expel Wind-Heat through mild sweating.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's own Invasion-of-Lungs-by-Wind-Heat slide — fever-over-chills, sore throat and headache is that slide's own core presentation.

3. Summer-Heat

Clinical manifestations: Sudden high fever in hot weather, drenching profuse sweating, intense thirst with desire for cold drinks, feeling of heaviness and fatigue, irritability and restlessness, scanty dark urine.
Tongue: Red body with a redder tip, yellow greasy/sticky coating, dry surface. Pulse: Rapid and soggy or overflowing.
Treatment principle: Clear Summer-Heat and transform Dampness simultaneously.
Note: bleeding method on P-3 and BL-40, no moxa. Summer-Heat is treated as its own distinct pathogen category outside the standard six in classical theory, with no matching Zang-Fu organ slide on this site — the same Warm-Disease-framework absence as Qi-Level Heat. No pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

4. Excess-Heat

Clinical manifestations: High fever with aversion to heat rather than cold, intense thirst craving ice-cold drinks, red flushed face and eyes, restlessness and irritability, profuse sweating that does not lower the fever, dark scanty urine and dry hard stools.
Tongue: Red body with thick, dry yellow coating. Pulse: Rapid and forceful, often overflowing.
Treatment principle: Cool the internal organs and drain persistent internal Fire.
Note: no moxa. This is the same Qi-Level/Yangming full-Heat picture described in Warm-Disease framework terms rather than an organ pattern, so it shares the same structural absence as Qi-Level Heat above — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

5. Toxic-Heat

Clinical manifestations: Burning high fever with a sensation of heat deep inside, red swollen painful skin eruptions/boils or severe sore throat, intense thirst for cold drinks and dark scanty urine, restlessness, irritability and flushed face.
Tongue: Red body with raised prickly thorns, dry yellow coating. Pulse: Rapid and forceful, often overflowing or slippery.
Treatment principle: Drain Fire and resolve toxicity to clear intense inflammatory Heat.
Note: no moxa, medical urgency. This is the by-now very well-established standalone-Toxic-Heat absence — no such slide exists anywhere on this site — so no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

6. Phlegm-Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Coughing up thick yellow/green sticky phlegm, chest tightness and a feeling of oppression, restlessness and irritability, flushed red face, thirst desiring cold drinks, nausea or epigastric bloating.
Tongue: Red body, swollen, thick yellow greasy coating. Pulse: Slippery and rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat and transform Phlegm, resolving chest obstruction.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Stomach-Heat-(or-Phlegm-Heat) slide — its own Phlegm-Heat variant explicitly adds chest/epigastric oppression, the same match used for Transient Ischemic Attack.
