Itchy Eyes

How Chinese medicine differentiates itchy eyes — distinct from Allergic Conjunctivitis already covered — the four patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Itchy eyes with vision changes or severe pain need medical evaluation before assuming it is a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for itchy eyes — 8 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

2. Damp-Heat in Stomach and Spleen

Clinical manifestations: Intense itching with sticky yellow discharge, eyelid swelling and redness, papules or small blisters along the eyelid margin, bloating and sticky incomplete bowel movements, worse in humid weather.
Tongue: Red body with thick yellow greasy coating, especially at centre and root. Pulse: Soggy and rapid, often slippery.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat and drain Dampness, regulate Qi and harmonize the middle burner.
Note: no moxa. No deck on this site combines Damp-Heat across both the Stomach and Spleen into one slide, so no pattern link is given here.

3. Liver-Blood Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Mild intermittent itching that comes and goes, dry gritty sensation in the eyes, blurred vision and sensitivity to light, pale complexion and brittle dry nails, worsens with excessive screen time.
Tongue: Pale body especially the sides, thin and slightly dry with thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and choppy, possibly wiry at left middle position.
Treatment principle: Nourish Liver-Blood to moisten and anchor the eyes, calm internal Wind generated by deficiency.
Note: moxa applicable on tonifying points. Direct match with this site's own Liver-Blood-deficiency slide.

4. Wind-Cold View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Itching worse with cold and windy weather, clear watery eye discharge, aversion to wind and cold, no redness or burning sensation, strong dislike of drafts.
Tongue: Pale or normal body with thin white moist coating. Pulse: Floating and tight.
Treatment principle: Dispel Wind-Cold, warm and disperse, relax the obstruction of Qi flow.
Note: moxa applicable given the Cold. Direct match with this site's own Invasion-of-Lungs-by-Wind-Cold slide.
