Rising Sensation from Stomach

How Chinese medicine differentiates the distinct symptom of Qi rushing upward from the stomach into the 6 patterns behind it, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's Acid Reflux, Hiccups and Belching pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

A rising sensation with chest pain, breathlessness, or fainting needs urgent medical evaluation to rule out a cardiac or respiratory cause before any acupuncture is considered.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for a rising sensation from the stomach — 3 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Six Patterns

1. Rebellious Stomach Qi View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: An upward-rushing sensation from the stomach toward the throat, uncontrollable belching or hiccups, nausea or vomiting after eating, upper abdominal fullness — worse with overeating, greasy food, stress or lying down after meals.
Tongue: Normal with white coating, yellow if Heat, greasy if Phlegm. Pulse: Wiry, possibly slippery if Phlegm or food stagnation is present.
Treatment principle: Descend rebellious Stomach-Qi, resolve Phlegm, tonify Qi.

2. Liver Qi Stagnation invading the Stomach View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Distending pain radiating to the ribs, symptoms that worsen with emotional stress or frustration, irritability and moodiness with frequent sighing, frequent belching or sour regurgitation.
Tongue: Normal or slightly red, sides may be redder, thin white coating. Pulse: Wiry, most pronounced at the left middle position.
Treatment principle: Soothe Liver-Qi stagnation, harmonize Liver and Spleen, relieve constraint.

3. Liver Qi Stagnation transforming into Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: A burning rising sensation with sour or bitter belching, explosive anger and irritability, a bitter taste, rib-side distending pain.
Tongue: Red, often redder at the sides, yellow coating. Pulse: Wiry and rapid, especially strong at the left middle position.
Treatment principle: Clear Liver-Fire, direct rebellious Qi downward and stop vomiting, harmonize the Stomach.

4. Phlegm-Dampness in the Middle-Burner

Clinical manifestations: Nausea or queasiness with a rising sensation, upper abdominal fullness and stuffiness, a heavy sluggish body and limbs, a sticky or greasy taste without thirst, excess mucus, drowsiness and a foggy head.
Tongue: Pale, swollen with teeth marks, thick white greasy excessively moist coating. Pulse: Slippery and often soggy, especially at the right Guan.
Treatment principle: Descend Qi, resolve Phlegm, tonify Qi, and drain accumulated Phlegm-Dampness.
Note: Confirmed absent again: no deck on this site has a standalone Phlegm-Dampness-in-the-Middle-Burner category.

5. Water Qi intimidating the Heart

Clinical manifestations: Something rushing upward from the stomach into the chest, palpitations worse lying down, lower-body swelling, feeling cold with cold hands and feet, nausea or vomiting of thin watery saliva, breathlessness on lying flat.
Tongue: Pale, swollen, tender with teeth marks, white slippery water-slick coating. Pulse: Wiry and slippery, or deep and fine; left Cun (Heart) often weak.
Treatment principle: Warm Yang and transform fluid retention, strengthen the Spleen, subdue the rushing Qi.
Note: Confirmed absent again (matches the same unlinked pattern named in Mitral Valve Prolapse on this site): no deck slide names Water-Qi-intimidating-the-Heart on its own.

6. Stomach Yang Deficient and Cold View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: A cold rising sensation from the stomach, dull cold upper abdominal pain relieved by warmth and pressure, vomiting of clear watery fluid, no thirst or a wish only for hot drinks, cold hands and feet, loose stools.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tender with teeth marks, white slippery coating. Pulse: Deep, slow, weak, especially weak at the right Guan.
Treatment principle: Warm the middle burner, disperse Cold, tonify Qi and Yang to stop the cold uprising.
