1. Phlegm-Fluids in the Stomach and Small Intestine
Clinical manifestations: A loud, immediate splashing sound triggered by drinking or abdominal pressure; vomiting of clear watery fluid without thirst; fullness and distension in the upper abdomen; worse with cold or raw foods, overeating, damp weather and prolonged inactivity.
Tongue: Pale, swollen, teeth-marked, white slippery, excessively moist coating. Pulse: Deep, wiry, slippery, especially at the right middle position.
Treatment principle: Warms Spleen Yang, transforms retained fluids and promotes urination through warming and drying methods.

2. Spleen Deficiency with Dampness
Clinical manifestations: Persistent gurgling after eating; loose or unformed stools; chronic fatigue; poor appetite; abdominal bloating worsening after meals; heaviness in the body; improves with rest, warm food and gentle walking.
Tongue: Pale, swollen, teeth-marked, white greasy coating, moist. Pulse: Soggy and slow, or slippery, weak at the right middle position.

3. Phlegm-Fluids Above the Diaphragm
Clinical manifestations: A splashing sound in the upper abdomen with chest and rib-side distension; thin white frothy cough worsening when lying flat; inability to lie flat due to shortness of breath; aversion to cold; a pale, puffy appearance.
Tongue: Pale, swollen, teeth-marked, white slippery, excessively wet coating. Pulse: Wiry, or deep and fine in chronic cases.
Treatment principle: Warms Spleen and Kidney Yang, transforms phlegm-fluids, descends pathogenic fluids from the upper burner and opens the chest.
