Swollen Ankle

How Chinese medicine differentiates ankle swelling — distinct from Ankle Pain and Edema already covered — the three patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Sudden severe swelling, one-sided swelling with pain, or swelling with breathlessness needs medical evaluation (a blood clot or other serious cause must be ruled out) before assuming a simple sprain.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for swollen ankle — 8 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Three Patterns

1. Qi and Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Stabbing, fixed pain at the ankle, purple or dark bruising, firm swelling worsening with walking, history of recent sprain or twist.
Tongue: Dark purple body with stasis spots, distended sublingual veins. Pulse: Wiry and choppy.
Treatment principle: Move Qi and Blood, dispel stasis to reduce ankle swelling and relieve fixed pain.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Liver-Blood-stasis slide via the well-established dark/purple stasis-spot-tongue marker plus the classic recent-sprain history.

2. Dampness Invading the Channels

Clinical manifestations: Heavy, aching swelling, worse in damp or rainy weather, limbs feel heavy, morning stiffness, numbness around the ankle, poor appetite, loose stools.
Tongue: Pale, slightly swollen with teeth marks, white greasy coating, excessively moist. Pulse: Soggy, slow.
Treatment principle: Drain Dampness, strengthen the Spleen's fluid transformation capacity.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. This generic Dampness-invading-the-channels Bi-syndrome picture has no matching slide anywhere on this site, related to the well-established Wind-Cold-Damp/Damp-Heat-in-channels absences — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

3. Painful Obstruction Due to Damp Heat

Clinical manifestations: Red, hot ankle, swelling worsens with warmth and improves with cold, thirst, dark scanty urine, heaviness and heat sensation.
Tongue: Red body, possibly swollen, yellow greasy coating. Pulse: Rapid, slippery.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat and drain Dampness simultaneously to resolve inflammatory obstruction.
Note: no moxa. This is the generic Damp-Heat-in-channels Bi-syndrome picture, already confirmed absent as a standalone slide on this site many times over — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.
