Throat Clearing or Frequent Swallowing

How Chinese medicine differentiates chronic throat clearing and frequent swallowing (globus sensation) into the 2 patterns behind it, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's own Chronic Sore Throat and Post-Nasal Drip pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

A persistent lump-in-the-throat sensation, especially with weight loss or difficulty swallowing solids, needs medical evaluation to rule out a structural cause before assuming this is functional.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for chronic throat clearing or frequent swallowing — 3 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
REN-22Stimulates the descending of Lung-Qi. Resolves Phlegm. Benefits the throat and voice.
P-6Opens the chest and moves Qi and Blood. Calms the Mind. Moves Liver-Qi.
LIV-3Subdues Liver-Yang. Extinguishes interior Wind. Promotes the smooth flow of Liver-Qi.
The Two Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Qi-Phlegm

Clinical manifestations: A lump sensation in the throat that cannot be swallowed or expelled, chest and upper-abdominal stuffiness, symptoms that worsen with emotional stress, greasy food and cold food, with little actual phlegm production.
Tongue: Normal, possibly slightly swollen, white greasy or slippery coating. Pulse: Wiry and slippery.
Treatment principle: Move stagnant Qi, transform Phlegm, and descend rebellious Qi to relieve the throat obstruction.
Note: Confirmed absent again: this site's own Sighing and Esophageal Cancer pages leave the identically-named pattern unlinked for the same reason.

2. Liver Qi Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: The throat sensation worsens with stress, anger and frustration; frequent sighing; distension along the ribs and chest; irritability; little or no phlegm; mood-driven fluctuations.
Tongue: Normal or light red, with red or slightly purple sides, thin white coat. Pulse: Wiry, taut like a guitar string, most noticeable at the left middle position.
Treatment principle: Smooth Liver-Qi flow and release the stagnation causing the throat sensation.
