Acute Breast Abscesses

How Chinese medicine differentiates an acute breast abscess — stagnant Qi and milk turning into Fire — into the three patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Supportive care alongside medical drainage/antibiotics when needed, not a substitute for it. Distinct from this site's own Mastitis page. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. A fluctuant, pus-filled breast lump, or fever with breast redness, needs prompt medical evaluation — drainage and/or antibiotics are often required; acupuncture here supports recovery and the underlying pattern, not a substitute for that care.

The Three Patterns

1. Liver Qi Stagnation That Transforms Into Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Distending, tender breast lump, obstructed or sluggish milk flow, slight redness and warmth over the lump, irritability and explosive anger, bitter taste in the mouth.
Tongue: Red body with redder sides and thin to moderate yellow coating. Pulse: Wiry and rapid, forceful at the left middle position.
Treatment principle: Cool Heat, soothe the Liver, regulate Qi, unblock milk ducts.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Stagnant-Liver-Qi-turning-into-Heat slide.

2. Toxic-Heat

Clinical manifestations: Red, swollen, hot breast with throbbing pain, high fever with chills, pus formation (fluctuant lump), intense thirst, constipation, dark urine, restlessness and irritability.
Tongue: Red body with prickly thorns and dry yellow coating. Pulse: Rapid, forceful, slippery.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat, resolve toxicity, cool Blood, promote pus drainage.
Note: no moxa — fever and pus formation need medical evaluation regardless. This site has no standalone Toxic-Heat slide on any deck, a gap confirmed absent many times over — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

3. Qi and Blood Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: A wound that refuses to close, thin watery or clear pus, persistent fatigue and weakness, spontaneous sweating, pale or sallow complexion, poor appetite.
Tongue: Pale body (possibly thin or teeth-marked) with thin white coating. Pulse: Fine, weak, especially at the right Guan position.
Treatment principle: Tonify Qi and Blood, support tissue regeneration and wound closure.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. This site has no combined Qi-and-Blood-deficiency slide, a gap confirmed absent many times over — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.
