Angina Pectoris

How Chinese medicine differentiates angina pectoris, the four patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs, and only as supportive care alongside cardiology management.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Chest pain always needs medical evaluation to rule out an acute cardiac event before acupuncture is considered — this page is supportive care for a diagnosed, medically-managed condition, not a substitute for that management.
General Acupuncture Points

The Four Patterns

1. Heart Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Stabbing or pricking chest pain, fixed in location; purple or dark lips and nailbeds; palpitations and a constriction sensation; worse with cold, stress, heavy foods, overexertion; better with warmth and gentle movement.
Tongue: Dark purple body with stasis spots, distended sublingual veins. Pulse: Choppy or knotted.
Treatment principle: Break up Blood stasis, invigorate circulation, open the chest vessels, relieve fixed pain.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with Heart-Blood stasis — stabbing chest pain radiating to the arm/shoulder and cyanosis of lips/nails are shared.

2. Phlegm in the Chest

Clinical manifestations: A heavy, oppressive chest sensation (not sharp stabbing); cough with copious white sticky phlegm; nausea or vomiting of phlegm; a feeling of throat blockage; poor appetite and body heaviness.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks, thick white greasy coating, moist surface. Pulse: Slippery.
Treatment principle: Unblock chest Yang, transform Phlegm, regulate Qi, widen the chest pathways.
Resolve Phlegm
Support Spleen
Note: no moxa. No deck on this site has a Phlegm-in-the-Chest category without an accompanying Fire or Mind-misting component, so no pattern link is given here.

3. Heart Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dull, tight chest pain or stuffiness, worse with cold or exertion; cold hands and feet; a bright pale face; palpitations worsening with activity; fatigue and low energy; better with warmth, rest, and gentle activity.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tender with teeth marks, white slippery coating. Pulse: Deep, weak, possibly knotted.
Treatment principle: Warm Heart-Yang, dispel internal Cold, unblock the chest channels, restore Blood propulsion.
Note: moxa applicable. Direct match with Heart-Yang deficiency — cold hands, a bright pale face and a feeling of stuffiness in the heart region are shared.

4. Heart Qi and Yin Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Dull, vague chest discomfort that comes and goes; shortness of breath worse with exertion; fatigue and lack of energy; night sweats; pronounced palpitations.
Tongue: Red or pale-red body, thin, possibly cracked, scanty or peeled coating. Pulse: Fine and rapid, may be weak at the left Cun (Heart) position.
Treatment principle: Tonify Heart-Qi, nourish Heart-Yin, generate fluids.
Note: no moxa (Yin deficiency present). No deck on this site combines Heart-Qi and Heart-Yin deficiency into one slide, so no pattern link is given here.
