Arm Pain

How Chinese medicine differentiates general arm pain into the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each — complementing this site's own Elbow Pain, Wrist Pain and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Arm pain with chest pressure, numbness spreading rapidly, or after significant trauma needs prompt medical evaluation before assuming a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for arm pain — 8 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
G.B.-21Relaxes sinews. Stimulates the descending of Qi.
L.I.-11Clears Heat and cools the Blood. Removes obstructions from the channel.
L.I.-4Expels exterior Wind. Stops pain. Removes obstructions from the channel.
ST-36Tonifies Qi and Blood. Tonifies the Stomach and Spleen.
SP-6Strengthens the Spleen. Nourishes Blood and Yin.
REN-6Tonifies Qi and Yang. Raises sinking Qi.
ST-40Resolves Phlegm and Dampness. Opens the chest and subdues rebellious Qi.
SP-10Cools Blood. Invigorates Blood and eliminates stasis.
The Six Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Painful Obstruction With Wind-Cold-Damp

Clinical manifestations: Aching cold pain, heaviness or numbness in the arm, stiffness with limited movement, symptoms worse in cold or damp weather, improve with warmth, pain does not move around.
Tongue: Pale, slightly swollen with teeth marks, white greasy coating, moist surface. Pulse: Wiry and tight, or soggy and slow if Dampness predominates.
Treatment principle: Dispel Wind-Cold-Damp, warm the channels, tonify Qi and invigorate Blood.
Note: moxa applicable. This site has no organ-nonspecific Wind-Cold-Damp Bi-syndrome slide, a gap confirmed absent many times over — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

2. Qi and Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fixed, stabbing pain in one location worse with pressure, bruising or dark veins visible on the arm, irritability or emotional tension, history of injury or overuse, pain worse at night.
Tongue: Dark purple body with stasis spots, distended sublingual veins. Pulse: Wiry and choppy.
Treatment principle: Invigorate Blood, dispel stasis, unblock the channels, move Qi.
Note: no moxa. Linked to this site's own Liver-Blood-stasis slide via the discoloration-marker rule.

3. Qi and Blood Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Dull, achy pain rather than sharp or stabbing, worse with fatigue and overwork, general weakness and low energy, pale complexion and lips, dizziness or lightheadedness.
Tongue: Pale body, may be thin or have teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and weak, especially in the right Guan position.
Treatment principle: Tonify Qi, nourish Blood, strengthen the Spleen.
Note: moxa applicable. This site has no combined Qi-and-Blood-deficiency slide, a gap confirmed absent many times over — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

4. Phlegm in the Channels, Joints and Muscles

Clinical manifestations: Fixed stabbing pain, joint swelling that feels hard to the touch, purplish discoloration of the skin, numbness or heavy sensation in the limb, subcutaneous nodules or hard lumps near joints.
Tongue: Purple body with stasis spots and white greasy coating, sublingual veins distended. Pulse: Wiry and choppy (or wiry and slippery if Phlegm predominates).
Treatment principle: Dry Dampness, transform Phlegm, invigorate Blood, dispel stasis, unblock the channels.
Note: no moxa. This site has no Phlegm-in-the-channels/joints/muscles slide on any deck, a gap confirmed absent many times over — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

5. Painful Obstruction With Liver and Kidney Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Dull, aching arm pain that feels weak and sore, lower back and knee soreness and weakness, pain worse in cold or damp weather, numbness or tingling in the arm, fatigue and lack of stamina, pale or dull complexion.
Tongue: Pale, thin body with thin white coating. Pulse: Fine, weak, and slow, the Chi (rear) position especially weak.
Treatment principle: Dispel Wind-Dampness, relieve painful obstruction, supplement the Liver and Kidneys.
Note: moxa applicable. Same as this site's own Shoulder Pain page: this pattern's Cold/pale presentation doesn't match the site's only Liver-and-Kidney-deficiency slide, which is Yin-deficiency/Empty-Heat framed — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

6. Painful Obstruction Due to Damp Heat in Channels

Clinical manifestations: Burning or hot arm pain, redness and swelling, pain worse with warmth and pressure and better with cold, heavy aching sensation, yellow greasy tongue coating.
Tongue: Red body, possibly slightly swollen, with yellow greasy coating. Pulse: Slippery and rapid, may feel soggy or wiry at the Guan position.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat and dry Dampness, clear Damp-Heat from the channels.
Note: no moxa. This site has no organ-nonspecific Damp-Heat-in-channels Bi-syndrome slide, a gap confirmed absent many times over — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.
