Bloating After Eating

How Chinese medicine differentiates bloating after eating — distinct from Abdominal Fullness and Persistent Belching already covered — the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Bloating after eating with unintentional weight loss or persistent vomiting needs medical evaluation before assuming it is a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for bloating after eating — 8 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
ST-36Tonifies Qi and Blood, tonifies Stomach and Spleen.

The Six Patterns

1. Spleen-Qi Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Bloating and fullness worsening after eating even small amounts, poor appetite or early satiety, loose or unformed stools, persistent fatigue and lack of energy.
Tongue: Pale, puffy and tender body with tooth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Weak and soft, especially at right middle position.
Treatment principle: Tonify Spleen-Qi, strengthen digestive function, harmonize the Stomach.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. Direct match with this site's own Spleen-Qi-deficiency slide.

2. Spleen Deficiency with Dampness

Clinical manifestations: Loose or unformed stools, heaviness of the body and limbs, fatigue and lack of energy, sticky or greasy sensation in the mouth, drowsiness especially after meals.
Tongue: Pale, swollen with teeth marks, white greasy coating, moist surface. Pulse: Soggy and slow, possibly slippery and weak at right Guan.
Treatment principle: Tonify Spleen-Qi, strengthen digestive function, dry Dampness, move Qi, harmonize the Stomach.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. No deck on this site combines Spleen-Qi deficiency with Dampness into one slide, so no pattern link is given here.

3. Food Stagnation in the Stomach View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Sour rotten-smelling belching, epigastric bloating relieved by vomiting, aversion to food and its smell, thick greasy curd-like tongue coating.
Tongue: Normal body with a thick greasy curd-like coating, thickest in the centre. Pulse: Slippery and full, especially at right middle position.
Treatment principle: Promote digestion, resolve food stagnation, harmonize the Stomach, move Qi.
Note: no moxa. Direct match — this site names the same mechanism 'Retention of Food in the Stomach'.

4. Liver Qi Stagnation Invading the Stomach View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Bloating and distending pain radiating to the ribs, frequent belching or acid reflux, worsens with emotional stress or frustration, irritability and frequent sighing.
Tongue: Normal or slightly red body, often redder at the sides, thin white coating. Pulse: Wiry, like a taut guitar string.
Treatment principle: Course the Liver and resolve constraint, move Qi and alleviate pain, invigorate Blood and dispel stasis.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Rebellious-Liver-Qi-invading-the-Stomach slide.

5. Damp-Heat in Stomach and Spleen

Clinical manifestations: Upper abdominal bloating and fullness after eating, bitter or sticky taste in the mouth, sticky incomplete bowel movements, heavy feeling in the body and limbs, thirst with little desire to drink.
Tongue: Red body, possibly swollen with teeth marks, thick yellow greasy coating especially at centre and root. Pulse: Soggy and rapid, often slippery.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat and drain Dampness, regulate Qi and harmonize the middle burner, dry Dampness.
Note: no moxa. No deck on this site combines Damp-Heat across both the Stomach and Spleen into one slide, so no pattern link is given here.

6. Cold-Damp Invading the Spleen View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Bloating that feels cold and heavy, improves with warmth and pressure, loose or watery stools, heavy sensation in the limbs.
Tongue: Pale swollen body with teeth marks, thick white greasy coating that is excessively moist. Pulse: Soggy or slippery and slow, especially weak at right Guan.
Treatment principle: Move Qi and relieve distension, warm the middle burner, dry Dampness.
Note: moxa applicable given the Cold. Direct match with this site's own Cold-Dampness-invading-the-Spleen slide.
