Dandruff

How Chinese medicine differentiates dandruff — distinct from Seborrheic Dermatitis and Itchy Skin already covered — the four patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Widespread scalp redness, oozing, or hair loss alongside flaking needs medical evaluation before assuming it is a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for dandruff — 9 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Four Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Damp-Heat in Stomach and Spleen

Clinical manifestations: Oily, yellowish, greasy flakes, scalp redness and itching, bloating and fullness in the upper abdomen, sticky or incomplete bowel movements, bitter or sticky taste in the mouth.
Tongue: Red body, possibly swollen with teeth marks, thick yellow greasy coating especially at the centre and root. Pulse: Soggy and rapid, often slippery.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat, drain Dampness, separate clear from turbid, restore healthy digestion.
Note: no moxa. No deck on this site combines Damp-Heat across both the Stomach and Spleen into one slide, so no pattern link is given here.

2. Heat in the Blood

Clinical manifestations: Fine, dry, white or silvery flakes, red inflamed patches on the scalp, burning or prickly itching, feeling of body heat worse at night, thirst with desire for cool drinks.
Tongue: Red body, possibly with red prickles, thin yellow dry coating. Pulse: Rapid and wiry, often with a slippery quality.
Treatment principle: Cool the Blood, dispel Wind, clear Heat from the Lungs and Stomach.
Note: no moxa. No standalone Heat-in-the-Blood slide exists on this site, a confirmed and recurring absence, so no pattern link is given here.

3. Blood Deficiency with External Wind

Clinical manifestations: Fine, dry white scales on the scalp, itching worsens at night or in dry windy weather, pale or sallow complexion, brittle nails and dry rough hair, dizziness or light-headedness.
Tongue: Pale, thin body with a thin white and slightly dry coat. Pulse: Fine, may feel floating at a superficial level.
Treatment principle: Nourish Blood and moisten dryness, dispel Wind and stop itching, tonify Qi and consolidate the exterior.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. This dermatological Blood-deficiency-generating-Wind pattern is distinct from the organ-level Liver-Blood-deficiency slide on this site (no vision/menstrual symptoms here), so no pattern link is given here.

4. Empty-Heat Caused by Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dark red patches rather than bright red, itching worsens in the evening or at night, night sweats, dry mouth and throat with desire to sip water, feeling of heat in palms soles and chest.
Tongue: Red, thin and dry body with cracks, little or no coating. Pulse: Fine and rapid.
Treatment principle: Nourish Liver and Kidney Yin, gently clear Empty-Heat and moisten dryness.
Note: no moxa given the Empty-Heat. Direct match with this site's own Kidney-Yin-deficiency-Empty-Heat-blazing slide.
