Endometrial Hyperplasia

How Chinese medicine differentiates endometrial hyperplasia — a thickened uterine lining, understood in TCM as a pattern of Blood Stasis — into the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Endometrial hyperplasia needs medical diagnosis (ultrasound/biopsy) and monitoring since some forms carry a cancer risk; acupuncture here supports the underlying pattern, not a substitute for that monitoring.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for endometrial hyperplasia — 10 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
SP-6Strengthens the Spleen. Nourishes Blood and Yin. Regulates the uterus and menstruation.
SP-10Cools Blood. Invigorates Blood and eliminates stasis.
REN-4Nourishes Blood and Yin. Strengthens the Uterus and regulates menstruation.
LR-3Subdues Liver-Yang. Invigorates Blood and regulates menstruation.
L.I.-4Expels exterior Wind. Stops pain. Removes obstructions from the channel.
REN-6Tonifies Qi and Yang. Raises sinking Qi.
ST-36Tonifies Qi and Blood. Tonifies the Stomach and Spleen.
LR-2Drains Liver-Fire and subdues Liver-Yang. Cools Blood and stops bleeding.
ST-40Resolves Phlegm and Dampness. Calms the Mind and opens the Mind's orifices.
L.I.-11Clears Heat and cools the Blood.
The Five Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fixed, stabbing lower abdominal pain, dark menstrual blood with clots, pain worse at night and with pressure, palpable mass or lump in the lower abdomen.
Tongue: Purple or dusky body with stasis spots, distended sublingual veins, thin white coat. Pulse: Choppy or wiry.
Treatment principle: Invigorate Blood, dispel stasis, warm channels, alleviate pain.
Note: moxa applicable on REN-4. Direct match with this site's own Liver-Blood-stasis slide.

2. Qi and Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fixed, stabbing lower abdominal pain, dark menstrual blood with clots, breast distension and tenderness before periods, irritability, mood swings, depression, distending pain in the rib-side/chest.
Tongue: Purple or dark body with stasis spots, distended sublingual veins, thin white coat. Pulse: Wiry and choppy.
Treatment principle: Course the Liver and resolve constraint, nourish Blood, regulate menstruation.
Note: no moxa. The prominent Liver-Qi-stagnation symptoms here (breast distension, sighing, mood swings, rib pain) are more distinctive than the shared Blood-stasis symptoms, so this pattern is linked to this site's own Liver-Qi-stagnation slide instead of Liver-Blood-stasis, to avoid over-using one slide on this page.

3. Qi Deficiency Causing Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fixed, stabbing lower abdominal pain, fatigue and lack of strength even after rest, dark menstrual blood with clots, pale or dusky complexion, shortness of breath with minimal activity, dizziness or lightheadedness.
Tongue: Pale-purple body with stasis spots, teeth marks, thin white coat. Pulse: Deep, fine, choppy.
Treatment principle: Tonify the middle and augment Qi, raise sunken Yang.
Note: moxa applicable on ST-36/REN-6. Also linked to this site's own Liver-Blood-stasis slide via the established extension to Qi-deficiency-causing-stasis variants — the second and last use of that slide on this page, within the established two-per-page cap.

4. Heat and Blood Stagnation in the Lower Burner

Clinical manifestations: Fixed stabbing pain in the lower abdomen, worse with pressure, dark menstrual blood with clots, mental restlessness and agitation, feeling of heat or fever worsening at night, dark purple lips, dry mouth and throat.
Tongue: Reddish-purple body with stasis spots, distended sublingual veins, dry yellow coating. Pulse: Deep, choppy, rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat from the Blood level, cool the Blood, invigorate Blood and dispel stasis.
Note: no moxa. Essentially a Heat-layered variant of the same Blood-stasis picture already covered by patterns 1 and 3 above — linking it a third time to the same slide would over-use it, so no pattern link is given here rather than force a third link; points still link fine individually.

5. Blood Stagnation and Phlegm in the Uterus

Clinical manifestations: Fixed stabbing lower abdominal pain, palpable mass or lump in the lower abdomen, copious thick or sticky vaginal discharge, dark menstrual blood with clots, sensation of heaviness or fullness in the lower abdomen.
Tongue: Purple body with stasis spots, swollen with teeth marks, white greasy coating. Pulse: Choppy and slippery, possibly wiry at the left Guan position.
Treatment principle: Dry Dampness and transform Phlegm, move Qi and resolve stagnation.
Note: moxa applicable on REN-4. This site has no uterus-specific Blood-stasis-with-Phlegm combined slide, the same gap confirmed on the Thick Menstrual Blood page last batch — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.
