Esophageal Cancer

How Chinese medicine differentiates esophageal cancer into the 3 progressive-stage patterns behind it — from the earliest and most responsive Qi-Phlegm stage through Blood Stagnation to the chronic, fluid-depleted Dry-Heat stage — and the points for each. Distinct from this site's own Cancer page. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

Difficulty swallowing or unexplained weight loss needs prompt medical evaluation — esophageal cancer is an oncology-first diagnosis, and acupuncture may only ever support conventional treatment, never replace it.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for esophageal cancer — 3 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
REN-22Stimulates the descending of Lung-Qi. Resolves Phlegm. Benefits the throat and voice.
REN-17Tonifies Qi and strengthens the Gathering Qi (Zong Qi). Opens the chest, regulates Qi and promotes the descending of Qi. Benefits the breasts and promotes lactation.
P-6Opens the chest and moves Qi and Blood. Calms the Mind. Moves Liver-Qi.
The Three Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Qi-Phlegm

Clinical manifestations: A movable lump sensation in the throat, chest stuffiness, symptoms that worsen with emotional stress, irritability and sighing.
Tongue: Normal pink-red, possibly slightly swollen, white greasy or slippery coating. Pulse: Wiry and slippery.
Treatment principle: Move stagnant Liver-Qi, transform Phlegm, moisten the esophagus, and address the emotional constraint at the root.
Note: Confirmed absent again: this site's own Acid Reflux and Sighing pages leave the identically-named pattern unlinked for the same reason.

2. Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fixed stabbing chest pain that is worse at night, vomiting dark blood or food immediately after eating, a hard fixed lump sensation.
Tongue: Dark purple or dusky with stasis spots, distended dark sublingual veins, thin white coat. Pulse: Choppy and wiry.
Treatment principle: Invigorate Blood, dissolve the congealed mass, relieve the stabbing pain, and nourish Yin to prevent further dryness.

3. Dry-Heat or Dry-Fire

Clinical manifestations: A dry burning tightness when swallowing, intense thirst craving cold drinks, five-palm heat, progressive weight loss, hard dry stools, scanty dark urine.
Tongue: Red, dry with cracks, thin dry yellow coat. Pulse: Rapid and thin, reflecting deep fluid depletion and interior Heat.
Treatment principle: Nourish Yin, generate fluids, clear Heat, and moisten the parched esophagus without creating Dampness.
Note: Confirmed absent again: this classical Dry-Heat/Dry-Fire category is new to the site and has no matching deck slide.
