Eyelid Twitching

How Chinese medicine differentiates eyelid twitching, the two patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Twitching that spreads to the rest of the face, affects vision, or doesn't resolve with rest needs medical evaluation before assuming it is a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for eyelid twitching — 5 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Two Patterns

1. Spleen and Heart Blood Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Eyelid twitching worsens with fatigue and comes and goes, flaring up noticeably after a long day; palpitations; difficulty falling asleep or excessive dreaming; poor memory; poor appetite and abdominal bloating; pale or sallow complexion.
Tongue: Pale, slightly thin body, may have teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and weak.
Treatment principle: Nourish Heart Blood and Spleen Qi, calm the Mind, stop twitching.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. This site's Spleen- and Heart-Blood deficiency slide is the closest match — poor appetite and a pale tongue with teeth marks are named there.

2. Liver Wind Agitating Internally due to Liver Blood Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Twitching spreads to cheek or corner of mouth, dizziness or lightheadedness, numbness or tingling in hands and feet, fine tremor of the hands, pale or sallow complexion, more stubborn than the early-stage pattern.
Tongue: Pale, thin, may quiver when extended, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and wiry, especially at left middle.
Treatment principle: Nourish Liver Blood, extinguish internal Wind, calm the muscles.
Note: direct name match with this site's own Liver-Blood-deficiency-generating-Wind slide. Takes longer to resolve (4–6 weeks or more) than Pattern 1.
