Facial Tic (Facial Twitching)

How Chinese medicine differentiates facial tics and twitching, the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. A sudden onset with facial drooping or weakness needs urgent medical evaluation to rule out Bell's palsy or stroke before assuming it is a simple tic; a persistent tic in a child also deserves a pediatric evaluation.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for facial tics — 12 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Five Patterns

1. Liver Wind Agitating Internally Due to Liver Yang Rising View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Sudden, jerky tics around eyes, face, or neck worsening with emotional stress; irritability and easy anger; dizziness; throbbing headache at temples; flushed face and red eyes.
Tongue: Red body, stiff or trembling, possibly deviated to one side, thin yellow or scanty coating. Pulse: Wiry, fine, may be rapid.
Treatment principle: Calm the Liver, subdue rising Yang, extinguish internal Wind.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's own Liver-Yang-rising slide — temporal headache, dizziness and irritability are the same markers named there.

2. Exterior Wind View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Sudden onset of tics after wind exposure or mild cold; aversion to wind or drafts; mild chills or low-grade fever; runny nose with clear discharge, sneezing, itchy throat; stiff neck.
Tongue: Normal pink body with thin white coating. Pulse: Floating, possibly slightly wiry.
Treatment principle: Release the exterior, dispel the Wind pathogen, calm stirring of internal Wind.
Note: moxa applicable if Cold-dominant. Matched on the exterior-invasion level to this site's Invasion-of-Lungs-by-Wind-Heat slide — aversion to wind, mild fever and floating pulse are shared, same logic used for Styes and Keratitis.

3. Phlegm-Fire Harassing the Heart View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Mental restlessness and agitation, copious thick yellow sticky phlegm, flushed red face and bitter taste, severely disturbed sleep with vivid dreams, foggy head.
Tongue: Red body, swollen with red prickly tip, thick yellow greasy coating. Pulse: Slippery and rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat, transform Phlegm, calm the Spirit.
Note: no moxa, reduce technique throughout. Direct name match with this site's own Phlegm-Fire-harassing-the-Pericardium... (Heart) slide.

4. Stagnant Liver Qi Turning Into Fire View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Tics worsen with emotional stress or anger, irritability and angry outbursts, bitter taste in mouth, rib-side distension or chest tightness, dry mouth and throat.
Tongue: Red body, especially on sides, with yellow dry coating, possible prickles. Pulse: Wiry and rapid, especially at left Guan.
Treatment principle: Smooth Liver Qi stagnation, drain Liver Fire, calm the Spirit.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Stagnant-Liver-Qi-turning-into-Heat slide.

5. Empty-Wind Agitating in the Interior

Clinical manifestations: Mild, persistent twitching of limbs or face, deep exhaustion and listlessness, night sweats and malar flush, dry mouth and throat, dizziness and blurred vision.
Tongue: Crimson, thin, dry, cracked, little or no coating, may tremble. Pulse: Fine, rapid, may be wiry at left Guan but lacks force.
Treatment principle: Nourish Yin and Blood, extinguish Wind, subdue floating Yang.
Note: gentle stimulation only at LR-3 to preserve Yin, moxa avoided (Yin-deficiency Heat pattern). No deck on this site has a standalone Empty-Wind slide distinct from Liver-Yang-rising-from-Yin-deficiency, so no pattern link is given here.
