Foot Pain

How Chinese medicine differentiates general foot pain into the four patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each — complementing this site's own more specific foot pages (Heel Pain, Foot Arch Pain, Foot Dorsum Pain, Big Toe Pain, Ankle Pain). Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Sudden severe foot pain with deformity, inability to bear weight, or signs of infection needs prompt medical evaluation before assuming a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

The Four Patterns

1. Qi and Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Stabbing pain in a fixed spot, worse with pressure or walking, history of foot injury or overuse, possible swelling or bruising.
Tongue: Dark purple body with stasis spots and distended sublingual veins. Pulse: Wiry and choppy.
Treatment principle: Move stagnant Qi and Blood, promote local circulation.
Note: no moxa. Linked to this site's own Liver-Blood-stasis slide via the well-established discoloration-marker rule.

2. Painful Obstruction With Wind-Cold-Damp

Clinical manifestations: Heaviness or numbness in the foot, pain worse in cold/damp/rainy weather, stiffness and difficulty moving joints, swelling without redness or heat.
Tongue: Pale, slightly swollen body with teeth marks, white greasy coating. Pulse: Wiry and tight, or soggy and slow if Dampness predominates.
Treatment principle: Expel Wind, Cold and Dampness, warm the channels.
Note: moxa applicable. This site has no organ-nonspecific Wind-Cold-Damp Bi-syndrome slide, a gap confirmed absent many times over across other joint-pain pages — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

3. Kidney and Liver Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dull aching pain in heel or sole, weakness and soreness in the lower back and knees, night sweats, heat in palms and soles, dry mouth and throat especially at night, restless sleep with vivid dreams.
Tongue: Red, thin body with cracks, little or no coating, dry surface. Pulse: Fine, rapid, often wiry, weak at the left Chi position.
Treatment principle: Nourish Liver and Kidney Yin, replenish fluids and Essence.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's own Kidney-and-Liver-Yin-deficiency slide.

4. Qi and Blood Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Dull aching foot pain worsening after prolonged standing or walking, improves with rest and gentle massage, general fatigue and weakness, pale complexion and lips, dizziness, poor appetite.
Tongue: Pale body, possibly thin with teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and weak, especially weak at the right middle (Spleen) position.
Treatment principle: Tonify Qi and Blood, replenish reserves through nourishment.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. This site has no combined Qi-and-Blood-deficiency slide, a gap confirmed absent many times over — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.
