Functional Dyspepsia

How Chinese medicine differentiates functional dyspepsia — chronic upper digestive discomfort with no structural cause found — distinct from Acid Reflux already covered — the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Persistent upper abdominal symptoms need medical evaluation (an ulcer or other structural cause must be ruled out) before assuming a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for functional dyspepsia — 10 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Six Patterns

1. Liver-Qi Stagnation Invading the Stomach View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Distending pain radiating to the ribs, worsens with emotional stress, frequent belching, irritability, sensation of a lump in the throat.
Tongue: Normal or slightly red body with thin white coat. Pulse: Wiry, at the left middle position.
Treatment principle: Smooth Liver-Qi, release constraint, prevent attack on the Stomach.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Rebellious-Liver-Qi-invading-the-Stomach slide.

2. Damp-Heat in Stomach and Spleen

Clinical manifestations: Bloating and fullness, bitter/sticky taste, loose sticky stools, heavy tired feeling, thirst with little desire to drink.
Tongue: Red body with teeth marks, thick yellow greasy coating. Pulse: Soggy and rapid, often slippery.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat, drain Dampness, restore Middle-Burner flow.
Note: no moxa. This site's decks have no combined Damp-Heat-in-Stomach-and-Spleen slide — the single most-recurring absence across this whole project, confirmed again here — so no pattern link is given; points still link fine individually.

3. Phlegm-Dampness in the Middle-Burner

Clinical manifestations: Epigastric stuffiness worse after eating, heavy sluggish limbs, bland taste, head feels wrapped in cloth, loose sticky stools.
Tongue: Pale swollen with teeth marks, thick white greasy coating. Pulse: Slippery and soggy.
Treatment principle: Dry Dampness, transform Phlegm, unblock the epigastric region.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. This site's confirmed-absent Phlegm-Dampness-in-the-Middle-Burner category (established via Weight Gain and Abdominal Masses), so no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

4. Food Stagnation in the Stomach View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fullness worsens immediately after eating, sour rotten-smelling belching, aversion to food, foul flatulence.
Tongue: Normal colour with thick greasy coating, thickest in the centre. Pulse: Slippery and full.
Treatment principle: Reduce food stagnation, harmonize the Stomach, restore downward Qi movement.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Retention-of-Food-in-the-Stomach slide.

5. Spleen and Stomach Qi Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Post-meal bloating improving with pressure/rest, chronic fatigue, loose unformed stools, poor appetite with early satiety.
Tongue: Pale puffy with tooth marks, thin white coat. Pulse: Weak, soft, forceless, empty at the right Guan.
Treatment principle: Tonify Spleen and Stomach Qi, dry Dampness, regulate the Middle Burner.
Note: moxa central to this pattern. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Stomach-and-Spleen-Qi-deficiency slide.

6. Stomach-Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dull burning pain in the upper abdomen, dry mouth/throat especially at night, hungry but not wanting to eat, thirst for small sips.
Tongue: Red thin body, dry centre, little coating with possible cracks. Pulse: Fine and rapid.
Treatment principle: Nourish Stomach-Yin, generate fluids, soothe burning fullness.
Note: no moxa given the Yin deficiency. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Stomach-Yin-deficiency slide.
