Hand Eczema

How Chinese medicine differentiates hand eczema into the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each — distinct from this site's own general Eczema and Ear Eczema pages, using the same site-specific-variant precedent. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Widespread blistering, signs of infection (pus, spreading redness, fever), or a rash that doesn't respond to usual care needs medical evaluation before assuming a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for hand eczema — 11 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action

The Six Patterns

1. Damp-Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Weeping, oozing blisters, intense burning itch, red swollen skin, bitter taste and sticky mouth, feeling of heaviness and sluggishness, loose sticky stools.
Tongue: Red body with yellow, greasy coating (difficult to scrape off), possibly swollen with teeth marks. Pulse: Soggy-rapid or slippery-rapid.
Treatment principle: Drain excess Fire from the Liver and Gallbladder, clear Damp-Heat.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's own Damp-Heat-invading-the-Spleen slide.

2. Spleen Deficiency With Dampness

Clinical manifestations: Dull red, scaly patches on the hands, bloating and loose stools, fatigue and heaviness in the limbs, pale swollen tongue with teeth marks, worsens with fatigue and overwork.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks and white greasy coating. Pulse: Soggy and slow, possibly slippery.
Treatment principle: Dry Dampness and strengthen the Spleen, promote urination to drain Dampness.
Note: moxa applicable on ST-36/BL-20. This site has no combined Spleen-deficiency-with-Dampness slide, a gap confirmed absent many times over — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

3. Blood Deficiency With External Wind

Clinical manifestations: Dry, flaky, or cracked skin on the hands, itching worse at night, pale or sallow complexion, dull brittle nails, dizziness or light-headedness.
Tongue: Pale, thin body with thin white slightly dry coating. Pulse: Thin overall, often wiry at the left middle position and floating at the right front position.
Treatment principle: Nourish Blood and moisten Dryness, dispel Wind and stop itching.
Note: no moxa. This site's Liver-Blood-deficiency slide has no Wind component, the same reasoning that declined this exact pattern name for Seborrheic Dermatitis earlier this project — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

4. Yin and Blood Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dry, cracked, or fissured skin on the hands, intense itching worse at night or in dry weather, dry mouth and thirst, night sweats or warmth in the palms and soles, fatigue with a restless quality.
Tongue: Pale-red, thin, dry body with cracks, scanty or peeled coating. Pulse: Fine and rapid.
Treatment principle: Nourish Blood and Yin, clear deficiency Heat, moisten Dryness.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's own Kidney-Yin-deficiency-Empty-Heat-blazing slide on the systemic Yin-deficiency level, dryness/cracking being the skin-specific manifestation.

5. Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fixed, stabbing pain in the hands, pain worse at night, thickened lichenified skin with cracks, purplish or dark discoloration of the skin, dark menstrual blood with clots (if menstruating).
Tongue: Purple or dusky body with stasis spots, distended dark sublingual veins, thin white coat. Pulse: Choppy or wiry.
Treatment principle: Invigorate Blood and dispel stasis, move Qi and alleviate pain.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Liver-Blood-stasis slide.

6. Yang Deficiency With Cold-Damp View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Cold hands and feet, aversion to cold (especially along the back), eczema lesions pale or skin-colored (not red), oozing of clear watery fluid, fatigue and desire to lie down.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks, white greasy moist coating. Pulse: Deep, slow, possibly soggy.
Treatment principle: Warm Yang and disperse Cold, promote urination and drain Dampness.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. Matched to this site's own Kidney-and-Spleen-Yang-deficiency slide.
