Hangover

How Chinese medicine differentiates a hangover, the four patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Severe vomiting, confusion, difficulty waking, or signs of alcohol poisoning need urgent medical attention, not acupuncture.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for a hangover — 9 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Four Patterns

1. Obstruction of the Spleen by Dampness with Liver Qi Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Abdominal bloating and fullness, sticky or incomplete bowel movements, heavy head and body, irritability, nausea or queasiness, distending discomfort along the ribs.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks, white greasy coating, thickest in centre, moist surface. Pulse: Slippery and wiry overall, right Guan soggy, left Guan wiry.
Treatment principle: Resolve dampness burdening the Spleen while soothing the stagnant Liver Qi.
Note: no moxa. Direct name match with this site's own Obstruction-of-Spleen-by-Dampness-with-stagnation-of-Liver-Qi slide.

2. Stomach Fire (Stomach Heat) View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Burning pain in the upper stomach, nausea or vomiting of sour/bitter fluid, intense thirst for cold drinks, foul breath.
Tongue: Red body, especially centre, with a thick dry yellow coating. Pulse: Rapid, slippery, forceful, especially at right Guan.
Treatment principle: Clear Stomach Heat, harmonize the middle burner.
Note: no moxa. Direct match — burning pain, thirst for cold drinks and foul breath are the same markers named on this site's Stomach-Heat slide.

3. Spleen Deficiency with Dampness

Clinical manifestations: Bloating and loose stools, fatigue and heavy limbs, poor appetite with no thirst or desire for warm drinks, heavy head and body.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks, white greasy coating, moist surface. Pulse: Soggy, slow, possibly slippery.
Treatment principle: Tonify Spleen Qi and resolve dampness.
Note: moxa applicable. No deck on this site combines Spleen deficiency with Dampness in one slide, so no pattern link is given here.

4. Liver Fire Blazing View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Throbbing temple or crown headache, red burning or painful eyes, bitter taste in the mouth, irritability, flushed red face.
Tongue: Red body with redder sides, dry yellow coating, possible red prickles. Pulse: Wiry and rapid, forceful at left middle.
Treatment principle: Subdue rising Liver Yang and drain Liver Fire.
Note: no moxa. Direct match — irritability, bitter taste, flushed face and a red tongue with redder sides are named on that exact deck slide.
