Hernia (Groin/Inguinal)

How Chinese medicine differentiates a groin hernia, the four patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Supportive care alongside medical/surgical management — acupuncture only, no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. A hernia needs a proper surgical evaluation — acupuncture here is supportive care for discomfort, not a substitute for that evaluation. A bulge that won't reduce, is very painful, or comes with nausea/vomiting needs emergency medical attention (a possible strangulated hernia).
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for hernia discomfort — 8 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
DU-20Moxibustion raises sinking Qi.
ST-36Tonifies Spleen Qi.
REN-6Tonifies Qi and lifts sinking.
SP-6Strengthens Spleen Qi, harmonizes Liver and Spleen.
LR-3Primary point to move Liver Qi.
LR-14Front-Mu point of the Liver, directly releases local stagnation.
REN-4Moxibustion warms the lower burner and dispels Cold.
SP-9Resolves Dampness, relieves heavy dragging sensation.
The Four Patterns

1. Spleen Qi Sinking View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Heavy, dragging sensation in groin, bulge reduces when lying down, worsens with fatigue and prolonged standing, chronic exhaustion, poor appetite and loose stools.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tender body with teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Weak, especially at right Guan, deep in severe cases.
Treatment principle: Strengthen Spleen Qi and raise the sinking Qi.
Note: moxa strongly indicated, especially DU-20. Direct name match with this site's own Spleen-Qi-sinking slide.

2. Liver Qi Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Distending, moving pain in groin or lower abdomen, worsens with emotional stress, irritability and frequent sighing, rib-side or chest fullness.
Tongue: Normal or slightly dark body, red or slightly purple sides, thin white coat. Pulse: Wiry, especially at left middle.
Treatment principle: Move Liver Qi, relieve stagnation, ease distending pain.
Note: no moxa. Direct match on the core distension/irritability/sighing picture.

3. Stagnation of Cold in the Liver Channel View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Cold, cramping pain in groin or lower abdomen, pain radiating to testicles or inner thigh, scrotal contraction or cold sensation, worsens with cold exposure, improves with warmth.
Tongue: Pale body with a white, slippery coating. Pulse: Deep, wiry, and slow or tight.
Treatment principle: Warm the Liver channel, expel Cold, and move Qi.
Note: moxa strongly indicated, especially REN-4. Direct match with this site's own Stagnation-of-Cold-in-the-Liver-channel slide — pain referring downward to the scrotum/testis and relieved by warmth are the same markers named there.

4. Damp-Heat in the Lower Burner View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Hot, swollen, painful bulge difficult to reduce, scrotal dampness, itching, or foul-smelling discharge, dark, scanty, or burning urination, thirst without desire to drink.
Tongue: Red body, slightly swollen, with a yellow greasy coating thickest at the root. Pulse: Slippery and rapid, more pronounced at the rear.
Treatment principle: Clear Damp-Heat from the lower burner, reduce swelling and inflammation.
Note: no moxa — an active inflammatory stage, medical evaluation takes priority. Direct match with this site's own Damp-Heat-in-the-Bladder slide on the Lower Burner organ-system level.
