Jaundice

How Chinese medicine differentiates jaundice — six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Jaundice always needs medical evaluation to find the underlying cause before assuming it is a simple pattern; sudden deep-golden jaundice with fever or bleeding is a medical emergency.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for jaundice — 10 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Six Patterns

1. Liver and Gallbladder Damp-Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Bright yellow skin and eyes (Yang jaundice), pain or distension under the right ribs, bitter taste in the mouth, dark scanty urine, fever or alternating chills and fever, irritability and restlessness.
Tongue: Red body with redder sides, thick yellow greasy coating. Pulse: Wiry, slippery and rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Damp-Heat from the Liver and Gall Bladder, drain bile, restore smooth flow.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Damp-Heat-in-the-Gall-Bladder-and-Liver slide — its core symptom list (yellow sclera, hypochondrial pain, bitter taste, dark urine) is exactly this pattern; the deck slide's additional genital/urinary findings are optional add-ons, not the defining picture, so this is a genuine match rather than the genital-specific mismatches declined elsewhere on this site.

2. Damp-Heat in the Gallbladder View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Pain or distension under the right ribs, bitter taste in the mouth, bright yellow skin and eyes like orange peel, aversion to greasy or oily food, dark scanty urine, nausea and vomiting.
Tongue: Red body, possibly swollen, with redder sides and yellow greasy coating. Pulse: Wiry, slippery and rapid, wiry most noticeable at left middle position.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat and drain Dampness trapped in the Gall Bladder, obstructing bile flow.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Damp-Heat-in-the-Gall-Bladder slide — the single-organ version, without the genital symptom cluster that marks the combined Liver-and-Gallbladder variant.

3. Cold-Damp Invading the Spleen View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dull, sallow yellow skin and eyes, heavy sluggish feeling in the body and limbs, bloating, fullness and poor appetite, loose or watery stools, aversion to cold foods.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks, thick white greasy coating, excessively moist. Pulse: Soggy or slippery and slow.
Treatment principle: Warm the Spleen, transform Dampness, restore the fluid transport function.
Note: moxa applicable given the Cold. Direct match with this site's own Cold-Dampness-invading-the-Spleen slide.

4. Spleen Deficiency with Dampness

Clinical manifestations: Pale, sallow yellow skin and eyes (not bright), loose unformed stools, heavy tired limbs and body, bloating and fullness after eating, poor appetite with no taste, foggy head and drowsiness especially after meals.
Tongue: Pale, puffy body with teeth marks, white greasy moist coating. Pulse: Soggy and slowed-down, possibly slippery.
Treatment principle: Tonify Spleen-Qi and drain Dampness gently, strengthening the Spleen's transforming ability.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. No deck on this site combines Spleen-Qi deficiency with Dampness into one slide, so no pattern link is given here.

5. Toxic-Heat

Clinical manifestations: Sudden onset of deep golden-yellow skin and eyes, high fever with intense thirst for cold drinks, bleeding tendency (nosebleeds, bleeding gums, purple spots under the skin), restlessness or mental confusion, dark scanty urine and constipation.
Tongue: Red or crimson body with prickly thorns, dry yellow coating, may become dry and black in severe cases. Pulse: Rapid and forceful, often overflowing or slippery.
Treatment principle: Drain Fire, resolve toxicity, clear Heat from the Three Burners — a critical pattern needing urgent medical care alongside treatment.
Note: no moxa — seek urgent medical care. No standalone Toxic-Heat slide exists on this site, a confirmed and recurring absence, so no pattern link is given here.

6. Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dark, gloomy yellow discoloration of the skin and eyes, fixed stabbing pain in the right upper abdomen worsening at night, palpable hard mass in the upper abdomen.
Tongue: Purple or dusky body with stasis spots, distended dark sublingual veins, thin white coat. Pulse: Choppy, wiry or firm.
Treatment principle: Invigorate Blood, dispel stasis, dissolve masses, move Qi and resolve stagnation.
Note: no moxa. Matches this site's Liver-Blood stasis slide — a purple/dusky tongue with stasis spots is the same discoloration marker named there.
