Ovarian Cysts

How Chinese medicine differentiates ovarian cysts, the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. A rapidly growing, painful, or suspicious cyst needs medical/imaging evaluation before acupuncture is considered.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for ovarian cysts — 9 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Six Patterns

1. Liver Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fixed, stabbing lower abdominal pain; dark menstrual blood with clots; irritability and premenstrual tension; pain worse with pressure or before periods.
Tongue: Dark purple body with stasis spots along the sides, distended sublingual veins. Pulse: Wiry and choppy.
Treatment principle: Move Qi and Blood in the lower abdomen, dissolve fixed masses.
Note: no moxa. Matches Liver-Blood stasis — dark, clotted menstrual blood and fixed pain are shared, gynecologically-framed hallmarks.

2. Blood Stagnation in the Lower Burner caused by Cold

Clinical manifestations: Fixed, stabbing/cramping lower abdominal pain, relieved by warmth, worse with cold; dark purplish menstrual blood with clots; cold sensation in the lower belly; delayed or irregular periods.
Tongue: Pale-purple or bluish-purple body, possible stasis spots, white slippery coat. Pulse: Deep, tight, choppy.
Treatment principle: Warm the Lower Burner, dispel Cold, invigorate Blood to dissolve the cyst.
Warm and disperse Cold
Warm the root

Note: moxa applicable throughout. No deck on this site combines Blood stagnation with Cold in the Lower Burner into one slide, so no pattern link is given here.

3. Blood Stagnation and Phlegm in the Uterus

Clinical manifestations: Palpable lump in the lower abdomen; stabbing pain worse with pressure; dark, clotted menstrual blood; copious thick sticky vaginal discharge; a heaviness or fullness sensation; difficulty conceiving.
Tongue: Purple body with stasis spots, swollen with teeth marks, white greasy coating, distended sublingual veins. Pulse: Choppy and slippery, often wiry at the left Guan position.
Treatment principle: Transform Phlegm and dry Dampness, move stagnant Blood and Qi.
Note: no moxa. No deck on this site has a Blood-stasis-and-Phlegm-in-the-Uterus category, so no pattern link is given here.

4. Damp-Phlegm in the Uterus

Clinical manifestations: Lower abdominal heaviness and fullness; copious thick white vaginal discharge; weight gain; fatigue and drowsiness; loose, sticky stools; delayed or absent periods.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks, white greasy coating, thicker at the root. Pulse: Slippery and deep, often soft.
Treatment principle: Dry Dampness, transform Phlegm, strengthen the Spleen.
Resolve Phlegm
Tonify Spleen
Note: moxa applicable on the Tonify-Spleen points. No deck on this site has a Damp-Phlegm-in-the-Uterus category, so no pattern link is given here.

5. Blood Stagnation with Heat

Clinical manifestations: Fixed, stabbing lower abdominal pain, worse at night and with pressure; an internal heat sensation, especially at night; dark, clotted menstrual blood; irritability and restlessness.
Tongue: Reddish-purple body with stasis spots and distended sublingual veins, thin dry yellow coat. Pulse: Choppy and rapid, often wiry.
Treatment principle: Drain Heat, break Blood stasis in the Lower Burner.
Note: no moxa. No deck on this site has a Blood-stasis-with-Heat category, so no pattern link is given here.

6. Phlegm in the Lower Burner

Clinical manifestations: Heavy, dragging sensation in the lower abdomen; thick white turbid vaginal discharge; a cold feeling in the lower abdomen; difficult or sluggish urination; poor appetite and loose stools.
Tongue: Pale and swollen with teeth marks, thick white greasy coat, especially at the root, wet surface. Pulse: Deep and slippery, often slow.
Treatment principle: Warm Yang, transform fluid retention, strengthen the Spleen.
Resolve Phlegm
Warm and tonify
Note: moxa applicable on the Warm-and-tonify points. No deck on this site has a Lower-Burner-specific Phlegm category, so no pattern link is given here.
