Rectal Prolapse

How Chinese medicine differentiates rectal prolapse, the two patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Supportive care alongside medical/surgical management — acupuncture only, no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Rectal prolapse needs a proper medical evaluation, and significant or recurring prolapse often needs surgical repair — acupuncture here is supportive care alongside that management, not a substitute for it. Prolapse that won't reduce, severe pain, or bleeding needs urgent medical attention.
General Acupuncture Points

1. Spleen Qi Sinking View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Bearing-down or dragging sensation in the rectum; prolapse triggered by defecation, coughing, or prolonged standing; chronic fatigue; poor appetite and loose stools; dizziness or lightheadedness.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, and tender with teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Weak and forceless, especially at right middle, may feel deep.
Treatment principle: Tonify Spleen Qi and raise sunken Qi.
Note: moxa strongly indicated, especially DU-20. Direct name match with this site's own Spleen-Qi-sinking slide.

2. Damp-Heat in the Large Intestine View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Burning sensation at the anus; mucus or blood in stool; urgent straining with incomplete evacuation; foul-smelling, yellow-brown stools; feeling of body heat or thirst.
Tongue: Red body with a thick yellow greasy coating, thickest at the centre and root. Pulse: Slippery and rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Damp-Heat from the Large Intestine, stop diarrhea to lift prolapsed tissue.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Damp-Heat-in-the-Large-Intestine slide.
