Abdominal Fat

How Chinese medicine differentiates abdominal fat accumulation into the four patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's Obesity and Fatty Liver pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Abdominal fat with a family history of metabolic disease deserves medical evaluation for diabetes, thyroid or hormonal causes alongside any acupuncture approach.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for abdominal fat — 3 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
ST-36Benefits Stomach and Spleen. Tonifies Qi and Blood. Tonifies the Original Qi.
SP-6Strengthens the Spleen. Resolves Dampness. Promotes the function of the Liver and the smooth flow of Liver-Qi.
SP-9Regulates the Spleen. Resolves Dampness. Opens the Water passages.
The Four Patterns

1. Spleen Deficiency with Dampness

Clinical manifestations: A soft, puffy belly that feels bloated after eating; fatigue and heavy limbs worsening in damp weather; loose or unformed stools; poor appetite despite weight gain; a muzzy-feeling head.
Tongue: Pale, swollen, teeth-marked, white greasy coating. Pulse: Soggy and slow, weak at the right middle position.
Treatment principle: Tonifies Qi, strengthens the Spleen and drains Dampness.
Note: moxa is appropriate. No standalone Spleen-Deficiency-with-Dampness slide exists on this site's decks — no pattern link is given here.

2. Stomach Fire/Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Strong, constant hunger with large meals that never satisfy; a burning upper abdomen; foul breath; a firm, warm, distended belly; thirst craving cold drinks; constipation with dry stools.
Tongue: Red with red prickles centrally, thick dry yellow coating. Pulse: Rapid, slippery, forceful.
Treatment principle: Clears Stomach Heat, cools the Blood and nourishes Yin.
Note: no moxa. Linked to this site's own Stomach-Heat slide.

3. Qi and Blood Stagnation

Clinical manifestations: A distending, tight abdominal sensation; fixed, stabbing pain worse with pressure; irritability and mood swings; painful periods with dark clotted blood; stress-related flares.
Tongue: Dark purple with stasis spots, distended sublingual veins. Pulse: Wiry and choppy.
Treatment principle: Invigorates Blood, dispels stasis, moves Qi and alleviates pain.
Note: no moxa. No combined Qi-and-Blood-stagnation slide exists on this site's decks — no pattern link is given here.

4. Kidney and Spleen Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: A soft, puffy, cool-to-touch belly; a sore, aching low back and weak knees; early-morning diarrhea; cold limbs especially below the knees; deep fatigue worsening with cold.
Tongue: Pale, swollen, puffy, teeth-marked, white slippery coating. Pulse: Deep, weak, slow, feeble at the rear positions.
Treatment principle: Tonifies Kidney Yang, warms Yang and transforms Qi.
Note: moxa is strongly indicated.
