Alzheimer's Disease

How Chinese medicine differentiates Alzheimer's Disease — distinct from Poor Memory and Poor Concentration already covered, which are milder standalone symptoms — the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Supportive care only. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Alzheimer's disease and other dementias require full medical diagnosis and ongoing neurological/geriatric care; acupuncture here is supportive alongside that care, aimed at symptom relief and quality of life, never a substitute for it.

The Five Patterns

1. Kidney-Essence Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Progressive memory loss, difficulty concentrating, soreness and weakness of the lower back and knees, dizziness, tinnitus, hearing loss, premature greying, hair loss, loose teeth, frequent urination at night.
Tongue: Pale, thin body with little or no coating. Pulse: Fine, deep, weak, especially at the rear positions.
Treatment principle: Nourish Kidney-Essence, tonify Marrow, restore cognitive function.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Kidney-Essence-deficiency slide.

2. Spleen and Kidney Qi Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dull, vacant expression, poor memory, slow thinking, chronic fatigue, weakness, soreness and weakness of the lower back and knees, poor appetite, loose stools, frequent nighttime urination.
Tongue: Pale, swollen with teeth marks, white moist coating. Pulse: Deep, weak, fine.
Treatment principle: Tonify both Spleen and Kidney, replenish Essence, nourish Brain Marrow.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. Linked to this site's Kidney-and-Spleen-YANG-deficiency slide despite the source naming plain \"Qi\" — the core presentation (backache, poor appetite, loose stools, frequent nighttime urination, deep-weak pulse, pale tongue) matches closely even without an explicit Cold marker, the same judgment call made for Postpartum Weakness; flagged here rather than presented as a perfectly clean fit.

3. Turbid Phlegm Blocks Orifices

Clinical manifestations: Mental confusion, foggy thinking, throat gurgling sounds, drooling, heavy-headedness (feeling the head is wrapped), thick white greasy tongue coating.
Tongue: Pale, swollen with teeth marks, thick white greasy coat. Pulse: Slippery, like rolling beads.
Treatment principle: Dry Dampness, transform Phlegm, open the sensory orifices, clear the Mind.
Note: this chronic foggy-thinking presentation (no unconsciousness, slurred speech or aphasia) was checked directly against this site's Phlegm-misting-the-Mind slide and declined for the same severity-mismatch reason OCD's identically-named pattern was declined — that slide is framed around acute/stroke-level presentations, not chronic dementia-type brain fog. No pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

4. Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Purple or dark tongue with stasis spots, fixed stabbing head discomfort worse at night, speech difficulties, dark complexion or under-eye circles, restlessness, easy fright, stroke or hypertension history.
Tongue: Purple/dusky body with stasis spots, distended dark sublingual veins. Pulse: Choppy or wiry.
Treatment principle: Invigorate Blood, dispel stasis, unblock the cerebral collaterals.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Liver-Blood-stasis slide via the well-established dark/purple stasis-spot-tongue marker.

5. Liver Fire Blazing View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Intense irritability, short temper, throbbing temple/crown headaches, bitter taste, dry throat, red flushed face, bloodshot eyes, loud rushing tinnitus, constipation with dark yellow urine.
Tongue: Red body with redder sides, dry yellow coating. Pulse: Wiry, rapid, full and forceful.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat, drain Fire from the Triple Burner, calm the Heart-Spirit.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Liver-Fire-blazing slide.
