Andropause (Low Testosterone)

How Chinese medicine differentiates andropause, the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Low testosterone should be confirmed with blood work and evaluated medically for treatable causes; acupuncture here is supportive care for the constitutional pattern, not a substitute for that evaluation.

1. Kidney Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Feeling cold all over, especially the lower back and legs; a sore, weak, or aching lower back and knees; markedly reduced sex drive; erectile dysfunction or soft erections; frequent urination, especially at night; deep fatigue and low spirits.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tender with teeth marks, wet white coating. Pulse: Deep, slow, weak, especially at the rear positions.
Treatment principle: Warm and strengthen Kidney-Yang, replenish Essence, restore sexual vitality.
Note: moxa applicable. Direct match with Kidney-Yang deficiency.

2. Kidney and Spleen Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Early-morning diarrhea; loose stools with undigested food; poor appetite and bloating after eating; cold hands and feet, especially below the knees; a sore, cold lower back and weak knees; low libido and erectile weakness.
Tongue: Pale, swollen, puffy body with teeth marks, white slippery coating. Pulse: Deep, weak, slow; both Chi positions especially feeble, right Guan soft and weak.
Treatment principle: Warm both Kidney and Spleen Yang, improve digestion, address hormonal decline.
Note: moxa applicable. Direct match with Kidney- and Spleen-Yang deficiency.

3. Deficiency of Both Kidney Yin and Yang

Clinical manifestations: Alternating chills and hot flushes; cold limbs with night sweats; deep, constant fatigue and lack of vitality; a sore, cold lower back and weak knees; reduced sex drive and erectile weakness; frequent nighttime urination.
Tongue: Pale, puffy-tender body with teeth marks and cracks, thin white coat that may be partially peeled. Pulse: Deep, fine, weak, especially at the Chi positions.
Treatment principle: Simultaneously warm Kidney-Yang and nourish Kidney-Yin.
Warm Yang
Nourish Yin
Note: moxa applicable on the Warm-Yang points only. No deck on this site has a combined Kidney-Yin-and-Yang-deficiency category, so no pattern link is given here.

4. Kidney Yang Deficiency with Water Overflowing View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Swelling of the legs and ankles; feeling cold, especially the lower back and limbs; low libido and erectile dysfunction; scanty or difficult urination; heavy, tired limbs; loose stools or diarrhea.
Tongue: Pale, puffy body with scalloped edges, wet white slippery coating. Pulse: Deep, slow, weak, particularly feeble at the Chi position.
Treatment principle: Warm Kidney-Yang, strengthen the Spleen, promote urination to resolve water retention.
Note: moxa applicable on the Warm-Yang points. Direct match with Kidney-Yang deficiency, Water overflowing.

5. Disharmony Between Heart and Kidneys Caused by Kidney Yang Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: A cold, aching low back and knees; palpitations with a feeling of fright; a sensation of heat in the chest with cold below; insomnia with mental restlessness.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, teeth-marked body with a moist white coat, the tip may be slightly redder. Pulse: Deep, slow, weak, especially at the Chi positions; the left Chi particularly feeble.
Treatment principle: Warm Kidney-Yang, settle the Heart, balance upper-body heat and lower-body coldness.
Note: moxa applicable. This site's \"Kidneys and Heart not harmonized\" slide is actually a Yin-deficiency/Empty-Heat presentation (night sweats, five-palm heat, dry throat) — the opposite nature from this Yang-deficiency/Cold pattern (cold low back, cold below with heat above) — so despite the similar name, no pattern link is given here.
