Appendicitis

How Chinese medicine differentiates the constitutional patterns seen alongside appendicitis into the five patterns you'll actually meet in the classical literature, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's Abdominal Pain and Diverticulitis pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Suspected appendicitis is a surgical emergency — a ruptured appendix can be life-threatening. Seek immediate medical care; this page addresses only recovery-phase supportive care after medical treatment, never the acute presentation.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for appendicitis (supportive care) — 3 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Five Patterns

1. Damp-Heat in the Large Intestine View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Cramping pain shifting to the right lower abdomen; nausea; poor appetite; fever with heaviness; thirst without a desire to drink; scanty, dark urine.
Tongue: Red with thick, yellow, greasy coating, thickest at the centre and root. Pulse: Slippery and rapid.
Treatment principle: Clears Damp-Heat from the intestines and unblocks Qi and Blood flow.
Note: no moxa.

2. Toxic-Heat

Clinical manifestations: Sharp, intense, fixed pain in the right lower abdomen worsening with pressure; a high fever with chills; extreme thirst; restlessness; constipation or foul diarrhea; a red face; a possible palpable mass.
Tongue: Deep red with prickly thorns, thick dry yellow coating. Pulse: Overflowing, rapid, forceful.
Treatment principle: Purges Heat and toxin aggressively and resolves abscess formation.
Note: no moxa. This site's decks have no standalone Toxic-Heat slide — no pattern link is given here.

3. Heat and Blood Stagnation in Lower Burner

Clinical manifestations: Fixed, stabbing pain resisting pressure; a hard, tender mass in the lower right abdomen; fever intensifying at night; dark or black stools; dark purple lips; irritability.
Tongue: Reddish-purple with stasis spots, distended veins, dry yellow coating. Pulse: Deep, choppy, rapid.
Treatment principle: Breaks Blood stasis, clears Heat and dissolves the abscess.
Note: no moxa. No combined Heat-and-Blood-Stagnation-in-the-Lower-Burner slide exists on this site's decks — no pattern link is given here.

4. Qi and Blood Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: A lingering, dull, vague ache in the post-acute phase; profound fatigue; a pale complexion; poor appetite; loose stools; dizziness.
Tongue: Pale, possibly thin or teeth-marked, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and weak.
Treatment principle: Tonifies Qi and nourishes Blood, strengthens the Spleen and supports healing.
Note: moxa is appropriate. No combined Qi-and-Blood-deficiency slide exists on this site's decks — no pattern link is given here.

5. Empty-Heat from Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: A low-grade afternoon fever; night sweats; a dry mouth and throat worse in the evening; a lingering dull ache; heat in the palms, soles and chest; restlessness; insomnia; flushed cheekbones.
Tongue: Red, thin, dry with cracks, little or no coating. Pulse: Fine and rapid, weak on deep pressure.
Treatment principle: Nourishes Yin, clears deficiency Heat and restores body fluids.
Note: no moxa (Yin deficiency with heat signs).
