Blocked Ear (Eustachian Tube Dysfunction)

How Chinese medicine differentiates a blocked or full-feeling ear, the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Sudden hearing loss, ear pain with fever, or fluid/blood draining from the ear needs urgent medical evaluation before assuming it is a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for a blocked ear — 10 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
S.I.-19Local point to directly open the ear orifice.
L.I.-4Regulates Qi and Blood flow to the face and head.
SP-10Invigorates Blood, removes stagnation.
BL-17Influential point for Blood, moves stagnant Blood.
ST-36Strengthens Spleen Qi, promotes ascent of clear Yang.
SP-6Supports Spleen Qi, resolves Dampness.
T.B.-21Local point, directly opens the ear orifice.
KI-3Source point, deeply nourishes Yin and Yang, benefits the ear.
BL-23Tonifies Kidney Essence and Yin to support the ear.
G.B.-2Local point directly in front of the ear, opens the auditory orifice.
G.B.-20Expels external Wind, relieves stiff neck and headache.
DU-4Warms the Gate of Life Fire with moxibustion.
The Five Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Qi and Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Persistent ear blockage and fullness, hearing loss (especially low tones), tinnitus, retracted or dull eardrum, chronic course often following a cold.
Tongue: Dark purple body with possible stasis spots, distended sublingual veins. Pulse: Wiry and choppy.
Treatment principle: Invigorate Blood, dispel stasis, unblock channels and open the ear orifice.
Note: no moxa. Matches this site's Liver-Blood stasis slide — a dark purple tongue with stasis spots is the same discoloration marker named there.

2. Spleen Qi Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fatigue and lack of energy, poor appetite, abdominal bloating after meals, loose/soft stools, ear blockage worsens when tired.
Tongue: Pale, puffy body with tooth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Soft and weak, especially at right middle.
Treatment principle: Tonify Spleen Qi, lift clear Yang to the head.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. Direct match with this site's own Spleen-Qi deficiency slide.

3. Kidney Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Gradual, progressive ear blockage and hearing loss, high-pitched tinnitus (worse at night or when tired), night sweats, heat in palms/soles/chest, lower back/knee soreness, dry mouth and throat.
Tongue: Red, thin, and dry with little or no coating, possibly cracked. Pulse: Fine and rapid, often weak at left rear.
Treatment principle: Nourish Kidney Yin, calm Liver and subdue Yang.
Note: no moxa. Night sweats, five-palm heat and dry throat are the same Empty-Heat markers named on this site's Kidney-Yin/Empty-Heat slide, so it links there rather than the plain Kidney-Yin deficiency slide.

4. Exterior Wind View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Acute onset (often after wind exposure), ear stuffiness or mild ear pain, runny nose or nasal congestion, aversion to wind or drafts, mild chills or low-grade fever, headache.
Tongue: Normal body with a thin white coat, tip may be slightly red. Pulse: Floating, felt clearly at the surface.
Treatment principle: Dispel Wind-Heat, clear Heat, relieve the exterior.
Note: no moxa. Matched on the exterior-invasion level to this site's Invasion-of-Lungs-by-Wind-Heat slide, the same logic used across many prior conditions.

5. Kidney Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Chronic ear blockage worsening with cold or fatigue, low-pitched tinnitus or muffled hearing, sensation of cold, frequent urination especially at night, fatigue and low energy.
Tongue: Pale, puffy and tender body with teeth marks, wet white coating. Pulse: Deep, slow and weak, feeble at the rear.
Treatment principle: Warm and tonify Kidney Yang, supplement Mingmen fire.
Note: moxa strongly indicated throughout. Direct match with this site's own Kidney-Yang deficiency slide.
