Cholangitis

How Chinese medicine differentiates cholangitis — infection and inflammation of the bile ducts — into the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's own Cholecystitis, Biliary Colic, and Gallstones pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Fever with jaundice and right-upper-abdomen pain (Charcot's triad) is a medical emergency — it needs prompt evaluation, often antibiotics or urgent drainage; acupuncture here is supportive of the underlying pattern, never a substitute for that care.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for cholangitis (supportive, alongside urgent medical evaluation) — 11 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Six Patterns

1. Liver and Gallbladder Damp-Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Pain or distension under the right ribs, jaundice, bitter taste, dark scanty urine, fever or alternating chills and fever, nausea with aversion to greasy food.
Tongue: Red body with red sides, thick yellow greasy coating. Pulse: Wiry, slippery, rapid.
Treatment principle: Drains excess Fire from Liver and Gallbladder, clears Damp-Heat from the Lower Burner.
Note: no moxa; fever with jaundice needs urgent medical evaluation regardless. Direct match with this site's own Damp-Heat-in-the-Gall-Bladder-and-Liver slide.

2. Liver Qi Stagnation That Transforms Into Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Distending or burning hypochondrium pain, irritability with explosive anger, bitter taste, red face and eyes, dark yellow urine, fever.
Tongue: Red body, redder at the sides, yellow coating. Pulse: Wiry and rapid.
Treatment principle: Soothes stagnation while clearing accumulated Heat to restore smooth Qi flow.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Stagnant-Liver-Qi-turning-into-Heat slide.

3. Liver Qi Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Distending right hypochondrium pain, frequent belching and sighing, irritability, worsened by emotional stress, frequent complaints of fullness.
Tongue: Normal or slightly dark body, red or purple sides, thin white coat. Pulse: Wiry, taut like a guitar string.
Treatment principle: Courses the Liver and resolves constraint, moves Qi and alleviates pain.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Liver-Qi-stagnation slide.

4. Toxic-Heat

Clinical manifestations: High fever with chills, fixed intense right hypochondrium pain, deep yellow jaundice, dark scanty urine with constipation, restlessness, confusion or irritability.
Tongue: Red with prickly raised thorns, dry yellow or thick coating, sometimes black. Pulse: Rapid and forceful, often overflowing or slippery.
Treatment principle: Drains Fire, resolves toxicity, clears Heat from the Three Burners.
Note: no moxa; high fever with confusion and deep jaundice needs urgent medical evaluation regardless — this is the pattern most likely to describe an acute cholangitis presentation itself. This site has no standalone Toxic-Heat slide on any deck — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

5. Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fixed, stabbing pain under the right ribs like a knife twisting, pain worsening at night, dark facial complexion, palpable lump or mass in the right upper abdomen.
Tongue: Dark purple or dusky body with stasis spots, distended dark sublingual veins, thin white coat. Pulse: Choppy and wiry.
Treatment principle: Invigorates Blood and dispels stasis, moves Qi and alleviates pain.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Liver-Blood-stasis slide via the established discoloration-marker rule.

6. Liver Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dull burning hypochondrium pain, dry mouth and throat, night sweats, afternoon or evening low-grade fever, dry gritty eyes, irritability with restless sleep, dizziness.
Tongue: Red, thin body with redder sides, dry surface with little or no coating. Pulse: Wiry, fine, rapid.
Treatment principle: Nourishes Liver and Kidney Yin, soothes the Liver and regulates Qi.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Liver-Yin-deficiency slide.
