Chronic Diarrhea

How Chinese medicine differentiates long-standing diarrhea — distinct from the acute Diarrhea page and from Chronic Dysentery already covered, which centres on blood/mucus and tenesmus — the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Chronic diarrhea with weight loss, blood, or fever needs medical evaluation before assuming a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for chronic diarrhea — 14 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Six Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Spleen Deficiency With Dampness

Clinical manifestations: Loose/watery stools, bloating after eating, heaviness, poor appetite, fatigue, sticky mouth sensation.
Tongue: Pale, swollen with teeth marks, white greasy coat. Pulse: Soggy and slow, soft and weak.
Treatment principle: Tonify Spleen-Qi and drain Dampness to restore digestive transformation.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. This pattern's own presentation has no Cold marker, so it is not forced onto the Cold-Dampness-invading-the-Spleen slide, consistent with the established precedent. No pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

2. Kidney and Spleen Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Early-morning diarrhea around 5am, cold hands/feet, sore lower back, chilled sensation, undigested food in the stools, clear pale urination.
Tongue: Pale, swollen, puffy with teeth marks, white slippery coat. Pulse: Deep, weak, slow.
Treatment principle: Warm Kidney and Spleen Yang, astringe the intestines to stop diarrhea.
Note: moxa central to this pattern. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Kidney-and-Spleen-Yang-deficiency slide — this one genuinely names Yang on both sides plus explicit Cold and early-morning-diarrhea markers.

3. Rebellious Liver-Qi Invading the Spleen View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Cramping pain easing post-bowel movement, stress-triggered episodes, rib-side fullness, frequent sighing/irritability, alternating constipation and loose stools.
Tongue: Normal or slightly pale with possible teeth marks. Pulse: Wiry overall, softer at the right middle position.
Treatment principle: Subdue Liver-Qi stagnation while strengthening Spleen function.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Rebellious-Liver-Qi-invading-the-Spleen slide.

4. Damp-Heat in the Large Intestine View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Urgent cramping, burning anus sensation, foul-smelling yellow-brown stools with possible mucus/blood, incomplete evacuation, thirst with scanty dark urine.
Tongue: Red body with thick yellow greasy coat, thickest at the centre. Pulse: Slippery and rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat and dry Dampness from the Large Intestine.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Damp-Heat-in-the-Large-Intestine slide.

5. Cold-Damp Invading the Spleen View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Watery, clear stools, cold abdominal pain relieved by warmth, limb heaviness, head heaviness, sticky mouth.
Tongue: Pale, swollen with teeth marks, excessively moist thick white greasy coat. Pulse: Soggy/slippery and slow.
Treatment principle: Warm Spleen-Yang, dispel Cold-Damp, transform fluids.
Note: moxibustion central on ST-36 and REN-12. Matched to this site's own Cold-Dampness-invading-the-Spleen slide via the explicit Cold-plus-Damp presentation.

6. Food Stagnation in the Stomach View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Loose stools with sour/foul smell and undigested food, bloating worsens after eating, sour rotten belching, food aversion, bloating relieved by vomiting.
Tongue: Normal body, thick greasy curd-like coat, thickest at the centre. Pulse: Slippery, forceful at the right middle position.
Treatment principle: Promote digestion, resolve food stagnation, harmonize the Stomach.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's own Retention-of-Food-in-the-Stomach slide via the same sour-belching/food-aversion presentation, paraphrased as \"Food Stagnation.\"
