Dark Circles Under Eyes

How Chinese medicine differentiates dark circles under the eyes — distinct from Dull Eyes and Eye Fatigue already covered — the three patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Sudden or one-sided dark circles with swelling or pain need medical evaluation before assuming a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for dark circles under the eyes — 7 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
SP-6Strengthens the Spleen. Resolves Dampness.
SP-10Cools Blood. Invigorates Blood and eliminates stasis.
LR-3Subdues Liver-Yang. Extinguishes interior Wind.
KI-3Tonifies the Kidneys (both Yin and Yang). Benefits Essence.
BL-23Tonifies the Kidneys and nourishes Kidney-Essence.
ST-36Benefits Stomach and Spleen. Tonifies Qi and Blood.
SP-9Regulates the Spleen. Resolves Dampness.
The Three Patterns

1. Blood Deficiency and Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dusky or purplish dark circles, pale or sallow face with a dusky tint, scanty or late menstruation with dark clots, dizziness or palpitations, fatigue and low energy.
Tongue: Pale body with a purple cast, thin, possible stasis spots, thin white coat. Pulse: Fine and choppy, often wiry at the left Guan position.
Treatment principle: Nourish Blood and invigorate Blood, directly addressing both the deficiency and the stagnation.
Note: no moxa. This site has no combined Blood-Deficiency-and-Stagnation slide, so this is linked to the plain Liver-Blood-stasis slide via the well-established dusky/purplish discoloration-marker rule, since the source's own presentation leans stagnation-dominant.

2. Kidney-Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dark circles with a thin, dry, almost translucent quality, lower back and knee soreness or weakness, night sweats and heat in the palms/soles/chest, dry mouth and throat especially at night, insomnia or restless sleep with vivid dreams.
Tongue: Red, thin, dry with little or no coating, possible cracks. Pulse: Fine and rapid, especially weak at the left rear position.
Treatment principle: Nourish Kidney-Yin, clear Empty-Heat, rebuild the deep reserves that support the skin around the eyes.
Note: no moxa given the Yin deficiency. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Kidney-Yin-deficiency slide.

3. Spleen Deficiency With Dampness

Clinical manifestations: Dull, dark circles with puffiness, heavy sensation in the body and limbs, abdominal bloating worse after eating, loose unformed stools, poor appetite and fatigue.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks, white greasy coating, moist surface. Pulse: Soggy and slow, often weak at the right Guan position.
Treatment principle: Strengthen the Spleen and drain Dampness, addressing the root cause of fluid accumulation around the eyes.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. This pattern's own presentation has no Cold marker, so it is not forced onto the Cold-Dampness-invading-the-Spleen slide, consistent with the established precedent. No pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.
