Diabetic Wounds

How Chinese medicine differentiates slow-healing diabetic wounds into the 5 patterns behind it, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's own Diabetes and Infected Wound pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

A diabetic wound needs prompt podiatric or wound-care evaluation — infection can spread quickly and silently in diabetic tissue. Acupuncture may only ever support that care, never replace it.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for diabetic wounds (foot ulcers) — 3 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Five Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Qi Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Thin watery pus with minimal odour, pale granulation tissue that develops slowly, persistent exhaustion, breathlessness with mild exertion, spontaneous sweating without effort.
Tongue: Pale, swollen, tender with tooth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Empty or weak, notably at the right middle position.
Treatment principle: Fortify vital energy to enable tissue regeneration and pathogen expulsion.
Note: Confirmed absent again: plain, non-organ-specific Qi-Deficiency has no matching deck slide on this site.

2. Toxic-Heat Stagnation

Clinical manifestations: A red, hot, oedematous lesion, thick yellow purulent discharge, an intense local burning sensation, fever, irritability, dark scanty urine, constipation.
Tongue: Deep red with prickly bumps, thick dry yellow coating. Pulse: Rapid, forceful, possibly overflowing and slippery.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat, resolve toxin, and reduce the early-stage sore.
Note: Confirmed absent again: standalone Toxic-Heat-Stagnation has no matching deck slide on this site.

3. Blood Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: A pale wound bed with thin clear exudate, light-headedness, pale facial features and nail beds, numbness or tingling in the extremities, restless sleep with vivid dreams.
Tongue: Pale, thin, minimal white coating. Pulse: Fine, weak, possibly choppy.
Treatment principle: Replenish Blood to nourish the skin and flesh, enabling gradual closure.
Note: Confirmed absent again: standalone Blood-Deficiency has no matching deck slide on this site.

4. Qi and Yin Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Persistent fatigue, dry mouth with little desire to drink, exertional breathlessness, nocturnal sweating, warm palms and soles, a pale wound bed with thin watery discharge.
Tongue: Red or pale-red, thin or absent coating, possibly cracked and dry. Pulse: Fine, weak, often rapid.
Treatment principle: Restore vital force and cooling reserves to enable the energy and moisture needed for healing.
Note: Confirmed absent again: combined Qi-and-Yin-Deficiency has no matching deck slide on this site.

5. Liver Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fixed stabbing wound pain, a hard indurated non-softening lesion, dark purple discolouration, worse with emotional stress, dark scanty urine, constipation.
Tongue: Dark purple with stasis spots especially at the sides, distended sublingual veins. Pulse: Wiry and choppy.
Treatment principle: Invigorate Blood, dispel stasis, and promote healing of the indurated lesion.
