Ectopic Pregnancy

How Chinese medicine differentiates the 2 Blood-stasis patterns described for a stable, medically-supervised ectopic pregnancy, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

Ectopic pregnancy can be life-threatening if the tube ruptures — it always requires close medical supervision, and surgery is often necessary. Acupuncture may only ever be used alongside that supervision when a woman is stable, never as a substitute for it.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for ectopic pregnancy — 3 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
SP-6Strengthens the Spleen. Resolves Dampness. Promotes the function of the Liver and the smooth flow of Liver-Qi.
REN-4Nourishes Blood and Yin. Strengthens the Kidneys. Strengthens the Uterus and regulates menstruation.
REN-6Tonifies Qi and Yang. Raises sinking Qi. Tonifies Original Qi.
The Two Patterns

1. Blood Stagnation in the Directing and Penetrating Vessels View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fixed, stabbing lower-abdominal pain; dark scanty vaginal spotting; a missed period; pain that worsens with pressure; a positive pregnancy test with abdominal pain.
Tongue: Dark purple with stasis spots and engorged sublingual veins, thin white coat. Pulse: Choppy and wiry, especially at the left Guan, may be deep at the rear positions.
Treatment principle: Invigorate Blood and break stasis, warm the channels and disperse the mass.

2. Blood Stagnation and Phlegm in the Uterus

Clinical manifestations: A palpable lower-abdominal mass, dark clotted vaginal spotting, fixed stabbing pain less acute than an initial rupture, a heaviness or fullness in the lower abdomen, copious thick or sticky vaginal discharge.
Tongue: Purple with stasis spots, swollen with teeth marks, white greasy coating. Pulse: Choppy and slippery, often wiry at the left Guan.
Treatment principle: Invigorate Blood, disperse stasis, and transform the Phlegm accumulation.
Note: Confirmed absent again: this site's own Endometriosis, Uterine Fibroids and Restless Fetus pages leave the identically-named pattern unlinked for the same reason.
