Enteritis

How Chinese medicine differentiates enteritis into the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's own Diarrhea and Ulcerative Colitis pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Blood in the stool, high fever, or signs of dehydration need prompt medical evaluation before assuming a simple pattern.

The Six Patterns

1. Damp-Heat in the Large Intestine View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Foul-smelling, urgent diarrhea with mucus or blood, burning sensation at the anus, abdominal cramping worsened by pressure, scanty dark urine and thirst, nausea.
Tongue: Red body with thick, yellow, greasy coating, thickest at the center and root. Pulse: Slippery and rapid.
Treatment principle: Releases the Exterior and clears interior Heat, clears Heat and dries Dampness, stops diarrhea.
Note: no moxa; blood in the stool needs medical evaluation regardless. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Damp-Heat-in-the-Large-Intestine slide.

2. Cold-Damp Invading the Spleen View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Watery, non-foul-smelling stools, dull cold abdominal pain improving with warmth, heavy sensation in the body and limbs, chills and aversion to cold, nausea or poor appetite.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks, thick white greasy coating, excessively moist surface. Pulse: Soggy or slippery and slow.
Treatment principle: Aromatically transforms Dampness, disperses Wind-Cold from the Exterior, regulates Qi and harmonizes the Middle Burner.
Note: moxa applicable given the Cold signs. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Cold-Dampness-invading-the-Spleen slide.

3. Food Stagnation in the Stomach View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Upper abdominal bloating and distending pain worsened after eating, sour rotten-smelling belching and acid regurgitation, loose stools with sour foul smell, aversion to food and its smell with relief after vomiting.
Tongue: Normal body with thick, greasy, curd-like coating, thickest at the center. Pulse: Slippery and full, forceful at the right middle position.
Treatment principle: Promotes digestion and resolves food stagnation, harmonizes the Stomach, moves Qi.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Retention-of-Food-in-the-Stomach slide.

4. Spleen Deficiency With Dampness

Clinical manifestations: Loose, unformed stools recurring over time, abdominal bloating worsened after eating, fatigue and heavy sensation in the limbs, poor appetite and drowsiness after meals.
Tongue: Pale and swollen with teeth marks, white greasy coating, moist surface. Pulse: Soggy and slow, soft and weak at the right Guan position.
Treatment principle: Tonifies Qi, strengthens the Spleen, drains Dampness.
Note: moxa applicable on ST-36. This site has no combined Spleen-deficiency-with-Dampness slide, a gap confirmed absent many times over this session — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

5. Liver Qi Stagnation Invading the Stomach View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Abdominal pain coming and going, often triggered by stress, alternating diarrhea and constipation, borborygmus (loud stomach gurgling), irritability, moodiness, frequent sighing, belching or acid reflux.
Tongue: Normal or slightly red body with redder sides, thin white coat. Pulse: Wiry, like a taut guitar string, most noticeable at the left middle position.
Treatment principle: Strengthens the Spleen, nourishes Blood and softens the Liver, drains Dampness.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Rebellious-Liver-Qi-invading-the-Stomach slide.

6. Kidney and Spleen Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Early-morning diarrhea (around 5am), cold hands and feet especially below the knees, undigested food in the stools, sore and cold lower back and knees, chronic loose watery stools, profound fatigue and feeling cold.
Tongue: Pale, swollen, and puffy with teeth marks and white slippery coating. Pulse: Deep, weak, and slow, both rear positions especially feeble.
Treatment principle: Warms the Kidneys, warms and strengthens the Spleen, binds the intestines and stops diarrhea.
Note: moxa strongly indicated throughout. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Kidney-and-Spleen-Yang-deficiency slide.
