Excessive Thirst

How Chinese medicine differentiates excessive thirst, the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Persistent excessive thirst alongside frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, or fatigue needs medical evaluation to rule out diabetes before assuming it is a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for excessive thirst — 10 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
L.I.-11Clears heat and cools the blood.
L.I.-4Disperses heat from face and head.
ST-44Clears stomach fire and relieves thirst.
SP-6Nourishes Yin and promotes fluid production.
KI-6Moistens the throat and relieves dry mouth.
REN-23Stimulates saliva and eases throat dryness.
BL-23Strengthens Kidney Yin to address the root of fluid depletion.
KI-3Powerfully nourishes Yin and anchors deficiency heat.
DU-4Warms the Gate of Life Fire with moxibustion.
REN-4Warms the lower abdomen and anchors Kidney Yang.
The Six Patterns

1. Excess-Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Intense thirst with craving for cold drinks, red flushed face and eyes, profuse sweating, restlessness and irritability.
Tongue: Red body, dry with a thick yellow coating, possibly with prickly papillae. Pulse: Rapid, forceful, and overflowing.
Treatment principle: Clear intense internal heat, generate fluids.
Note: no moxa. Matched on the internal pattern to this site's Stomach-Heat slide — its own point (ST-44) is used identically for draining Stomach Fire here.

2. Body Fluids Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Thirst with desire to drink water, dry mouth and lips, dry lackluster skin, scanty dark urine.
Tongue: Red, dry, thin body with cracks and little or no coating. Pulse: Fine and rapid.
Treatment principle: Replenish depleted body fluids and moisten dryness.
Note: no moxa. No deck on this site has a general Body-Fluids-deficiency slide independent of a specific organ, so no pattern link is given here.

3. Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Thirst with desire for small sips, thirst worse at night, dry mouth and throat, night sweats, heat in palms/soles/chest, flushed cheekbones.
Tongue: Red, thin body with cracks, little or no coating, dry surface. Pulse: Fine and rapid.
Treatment principle: Nourish the body's cooling and moistening reserves.
Note: no moxa. Direct match, reusing the well-established Kidney-Yin/Empty-Heat slide.

4. Qi and Yin Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Dry mouth with little desire to drink, fatigue and lack of strength, shortness of breath on exertion, spontaneous sweating during day, warm sensation in palms/soles/chest.
Tongue: Pale-red or red body with a thin or absent coating, dry surface, possibly cracked. Pulse: Fine and weak, may be rapid.
Treatment principle: Boost Qi to transport fluids upward and nourish Yin.
SP-6 ↑ EX-HN-12 (Jinjin) ⊥ EX-HN-13 (Yuye) ⊥
Note: no moxa. No deck on this site combines Qi and Yin deficiency into one slide, so no pattern link is given here.

5. Damp-Heat

Clinical manifestations: Thirst with little desire to actually drink, sticky or greasy sensation in mouth, body feels heavy and sluggish, chest and upper abdominal stuffiness, dark yellow or scanty urine, nausea.
Tongue: Red body with a yellow, greasy coating. Pulse: Soggy-rapid, floating soft and fine.
Treatment principle: Clear the sticky, turbid obstruction blocking fluid movement.
Note: no moxa. This picture is chest/digestive-framed rather than the Lower-Burner-specific presentation this site's Damp-Heat decks are built around, so no pattern link is forced here.

6. Kidney Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Thirst with desire for warm drinks, cold sensation in lower back and legs, frequent clear urination especially at night, fatigue and low energy.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tender body with teeth marks and a wet white coating. Pulse: Deep, slow, and weak, especially at Chi.
Treatment principle: Warm the body's pilot light so water vaporizes properly.
Note: moxa strongly indicated throughout. Direct match — cold, frequent clear urination and fatigue are the same markers named on this site's Kidney-Yang deficiency slide.
