Fetus Malposition

How Chinese medicine differentiates fetus malposition into the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's Threatened Miscarriage and Recurrent Miscarriage pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Fetal position should always be confirmed and monitored by your obstetric provider; moxibustion for breech presentation is typically used between 34-36 weeks under professional guidance, never as a substitute for medical monitoring.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for fetus malposition (breech or transverse presentation) — 3 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
BL-67Subdues rebellious Qi from the head. Clears Heat. Resolves Damp-Heat.
SP-6Strengthens the Spleen. Resolves Dampness. Promotes the function of the Liver and the smooth flow of Liver-Qi.
ST-36Benefits Stomach and Spleen. Tonifies Qi and Blood. Tonifies the Original Qi.
The Five Patterns

1. Kidney Qi Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Deep lower back and knee soreness; extreme fatigue; frequent nighttime urination with clear urine; shortness of breath with mild exertion; dizziness; heaviness in the legs; the baby lacking the motive force to turn.
Tongue: Pale, slightly puffy, teeth-marked, thin white coating. Pulse: Deep, weak, fine, weakest at the rear positions.
Treatment principle: Tonifies Kidney Qi to restore the fundamental energy powering fetal rotation.
Note: moxa on BL-67 is the classical technique. Linked to this site's own Kidney-Qi-not-Firm slide as the closest general match.

2. Spleen Deficiency with Dampness

Clinical manifestations: Heaviness in the abdomen and limbs; loose stools; bloating after eating; poor appetite; water retention; a large-for-dates fundal height, with excessive amniotic fluid restricting the baby's movement.
Tongue: Pale, swollen, teeth-marked, white greasy coating, moist. Pulse: Soggy and slow, possibly slippery.
Treatment principle: Strengthens the Spleen and drains Dampness to lighten the uterine environment and restore supportive Qi.
Note: moxa on BL-67 is the classical technique. No standalone Spleen-Deficiency-with-Dampness slide exists on this site's decks — no pattern link is given here.

3. Liver Qi Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Rib-side and flank bloating or distension; irritability and mood swings; frequent sighing; breast tenderness; lower abdominal tension worsening with stress, tightening the uterus and restricting fetal space.
Tongue: Normal or slightly dark with red sides, thin white coat. Pulse: Wiry, especially tense at the left middle position.
Treatment principle: Smooths Liver Qi flow to relax the uterus and allow natural turning.
Note: moxa on BL-67 is the classical technique.

4. Qi and Blood Stagnation

Clinical manifestations: Fixed, stabbing or heavy lower abdominal pain; restricted or uncomfortable fetal movement; emotional tension and a feeling of being stuck.
Tongue: Dark purple with stasis spots and distended sublingual veins, thin white coat. Pulse: Wiry and choppy, like a knife scraping bamboo.
Treatment principle: Invigorates Qi and Blood circulation to dissolve the stasis barrier obstructing turning.
Note: moxa on BL-67 is the classical technique. No combined Qi-and-Blood-stagnation slide exists on this site's decks — no pattern link is given here.

5. Blood Deficiency and Stagnation

Clinical manifestations: A fixed, dull, lower abdominal ache; a history of scanty, dark, clotted periods; dizziness and heart palpitations; fatigue and low energy.
Tongue: Pale with a purple or dusky cast, thin coating, possible stasis spots, distended sublingual veins. Pulse: Fine and choppy, often wiry at the left middle position.
Treatment principle: Nourishes Blood while invigorating circulation to provide both the resources and movement needed for turning.
Note: moxa on BL-67 is the classical technique. No combined Blood-Deficiency-and-Stagnation slide exists on this site's decks — no pattern link is given here.
