Heat Stroke

How Chinese medicine differentiates heat stroke, the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Educational reference only — heat stroke is a medical emergency; acupuncture is never a substitute for emergency cooling and hospital care.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Confusion, loss of consciousness, convulsions, or a body temperature that won't come down need immediate emergency medical care (call emergency services, begin rapid cooling) — acupuncture has no role in the acute emergency and this page exists purely for clinical education, not as a treatment guide to use in place of that care.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points referenced in the TCM literature for heat stroke — 12 key points, shown here for educational reference across the patterns below.

PointKey action
DU-14Clears heat from the entire body.
L.I.-11Clears Yangming heat and cools blood.
ST-44Clears Stomach fire and calms irritability.
P-6Calms Heart and Spirit, relieves restlessness.
ST-36Tonifies Qi, promotes fluid production.
SP-9Drains dampness via the Spleen channel.
REN-12Harmonizes the Stomach, transforms dampness.
KI-3Nourishes Kidney Yin to anchor fluids and cool deficiency heat.
SP-6Supports Yin and blood production.
REN-6Tonifies original Qi to lift fatigue and sweating.
P-7Calms the Pericardium, settles the Shen.
HE-7Sedates Heart Fire, anchors the spirit.
KI-1Revives consciousness, draws excess Heat downward.
LR-3Extinguishes Liver Wind, calms convulsions.
The Six Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Bright Yang Stomach Heat

Clinical manifestations: High continuous fever that does not improve with sweating, profuse sweating, intense thirst with craving for cold water, flushed red face, irritability and restlessness, scanty dark urine.
Tongue: Red body with yellow, dry coating, early cracks may appear. Pulse: Overflowing and surging, rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear intense stomach heat, generate fluids.
Note: no moxa. Matched on the internal pattern to this site's Stomach-Heat slide, sharing the thirst-for-cold-drinks and heat-sensation core.

2. Summer-Heat

Clinical manifestations: Profuse sweating, intense thirst for cold drinks, irritability and mental restlessness, dizziness and heavy limbs, fever worse after sun exposure.
Tongue: Red body, redder tip, yellow greasy or sticky coat with dry surface. Pulse: Rapid, soggy or overflowing.
Treatment principle: Clear external summer-heat pathogen, replenish Qi and fluids.
Note: no moxa. No standalone Summer-Heat slide exists on this site, so no pattern link is given here.

3. Summer Heat with Dampness

Clinical manifestations: Fever that stays despite sweating, heavy aching limbs and body heaviness, stuffy chest and bloated upper abdomen, thirst with little desire to drink, nausea or vomiting, loose sticky stools.
Tongue: Red body with white, greasy coating, may turn yellow if heat intensifies. Pulse: Soggy and rapid.
Treatment principle: Release exterior, resolve dampness, clear summer heat.
Note: moxa or mild stimulation only on REN-12. No standalone Summer-Heat-with-Dampness slide exists on this site, so no pattern link is given here.

4. Qi and Yin Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Fatigue and lack of strength, dry mouth with little desire to drink, spontaneous sweating, night sweats, lingering low-grade fever, shortness of breath.
Tongue: Red or pale-red body, thin or absent coating, possibly cracked and dry. Pulse: Fine and weak, possibly rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear lingering summer heat while replenishing Qi and Yin.
Note: moxa or gentle needle applicable. No deck on this site combines Qi and Yin deficiency into one slide, so no pattern link is given here.

5. Heat in Pericardium View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Loss of consciousness or delirium, cold hands and feet despite high fever, crimson stiff tongue, high fever worse at night, incoherent speech or inability to speak.
Tongue: Crimson body, stiff or shortened, yellow dry coating or little coating. Pulse: Fine and rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear intense heat invading the Pericardium, restore consciousness. This is a medical emergency — emergency medical care, not acupuncture, is the immediate priority.
Note: no moxa. Direct match — the deck slide names fever at night, delirium and incoherent speech/aphasia explicitly, and notes this level can progress to Blood-level Heat with convulsions (see Pattern 6).

6. Heat Victorious Stirring Wind View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Violent convulsions or seizures, stiffness and rigidity of neck and limbs, eyes rolling upward or fixed gaze, loss of consciousness or delirium, high fever that does not break.
Tongue: Deep red or crimson, stiff and dry, possibly with prickles, yellow dry coating. Pulse: Wiry and rapid, forceful.
Treatment principle: Clear extreme heat penetrating to Blood level, extinguish internal Wind. This is a medical emergency — emergency medical care, not acupuncture, is the immediate priority.
Note: no moxa. Direct match — this site's Extreme-Heat-generating-Wind slide is explicitly badged an Emergency pattern and names convulsions, rigidity, tremor and coma exactly as here.
