Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

How Chinese medicine differentiates the IBD umbrella into the 5 patterns behind it, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's own Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's Disease pages, which carry their own separate differentiation. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

IBD is a chronic condition requiring ongoing gastroenterology care — acupuncture may only ever support that care, never replace it. Blood in the stool, severe pain, or fever needs prompt medical evaluation.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for IBD — 3 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
ST-36Benefits Stomach and Spleen. Tonifies Qi and Blood. Tonifies the Original Qi.
SP-6Strengthens the Spleen. Resolves Dampness. Promotes the function of the Liver and the smooth flow of Liver-Qi.
ST-25Regulates the Intestines. Regulates Stomach and Spleen. Moves Qi and invigorates Blood.
